Burrows and Vamp-on-Vamp violence
« on: February 16, 2012, 01:33:20 pm »

Do vampires respect burrow designations?  If so, I'd like to create a vampire-only elite fighting squad that is kept separate from the main fort.  However, will vampires also kill other vampires if there's no other prey around?

We're not sure if they drink from blood barrels yet, though.

It would be neat if vamps preferred blood barrels to dwarves, allowing them to coexist peacefully in a fort and add some extra muscle.

According to Toady, vampires only target sleeping victims; as vamps don't sleep, you don't have to worry about them attacking each other. The primary concern is keeping them from feeding on your important civilians (they can have all the waxworkers they want as long as they don't touch any legendary weaponsmiths).

Wait, can we actually milk caged goblins for their blood now? :P

Well, if they only feed on sleeping individuals, invaders don't sleep...  Appears that only actual dwarves will work, though blood barrels are yet untested.

An advanced ‼science‼ project might be finding out if they would feed on goblins that are unconscious, or elves that are comatose due to partial brain removal completely by accident. Ie. whether it's the sleeping task, the bed, or the state.

A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

If it's the unconscious state, then a solid fall should render a goblin usable.

But if they are disguised, they will presumably follow military orders and use those centuries worth of stats to do some buttkicking.

Ah, good to know!  But do they obey burrows?

Not sure if we know whether they obey burrows for feeding. Other dwarves do though, so it should be pretty simple separating your city into the "undercity" (vampire military, second-class dwarves, were-beast holding pens that can be opened to the outside, trading depot) and "inner circle" (valuable dwarves) with an airlock system in between for goods and dwarf transfer.

I'm pretty sure I disrupted a vampires feeding by putting him into a burrow.
