Oddly enough, I have never dealt with animals in cages, but, I bought a cat from a trader recently. How do I set it free? I checked the wiki, it never said anything about opening the cage and setting the animal(s) inside free.

(b)uild the cage somewhere and (q) over it. In that menu, there's an (a)ssign option. Pick that and, since it's the only animal in a cage, it should be the only one to have a [C] to the right of its name. Go to that one and press enter. If there are more animals with [C] next to them, the ones in the cage you have highlighted have a + to the left of their name.
