I can't do it.
« on: February 16, 2012, 05:49:14 am »

Two years now since I told my Dwarfs to put their armor on. Nothing.

What am I doing wrong?

I'll ignore custom uniforms for now:

1) Make a squad. When it asks, assign them one of the preset uniforms - whichever you have the gear for.
2) Not 100% sure this is needed, but assign the squad to active duty. s-a-t.

And that's it, they should go pick up whatever you have that fits their uniform.

Here's what I do, and it never fails.

1) Set your uniforms to be EXACT matches, and to replace clothing.
2) Make sure you assign that uniform to the entire squad.
3) Set the squad to Active/Training; even if you edit the schedule so none of them are training at all, they WILL go and fetch their uniform.  Also, if the uniforms are incomplete, but you do all of this, they will immediately claim any missing pieces as soon as they become available.

Thank you! I never even thought to change the setting to exact. I thought that partial match would make them not wear mismatched gloves, boots, socks, etc. I'll try this next fortress. This one, uh, didn't turn out so well.

Just the option "exact matches" or like "brown olm leather boots"-exact?

replace clothing

Can't emphasize this enough.  I've surmounted what seemed to be previously insurmountable issues with armor by changing this to replace clothing.  Always do this.

Just the option; note that if you leave it open on material (i.e., "high boots" instead of "<material here> high boots"), they'll grab anything that fits.

This can be a benefit, if you like; for example, if you want them to wear a full set of regular clothes under their armor and leather, you could just add "gloves", "cap", "socks", etc. and they'll grab whatever they find (or already own) before adding armored items.

You only need to get exact on the item if you're doing something advanced, like color-coordinated robes and cloaks, or assigning a specific artifact to a soldier.
