selling caged creatures
« on: February 15, 2012, 11:52:17 pm »

ok, first actual thread I've ever made, so bare with me.

I have successfully sold non tamed creatures, in cages, to dwarven traders.

to do so, carve out a 5x5 square, just enough for a depot. then carve out a single tile on any of its walls, so that you have a jutting one square. it must be surrounded on three sides with some.movement blocking structure, ie wall tree fortification. construct the occupied cage on the single tile, then deconstruct building. then go to trade depot and select for trading, the cage is now 0 tiles away so does.not have to be moved, but a dwarf must touch it to show up in a trade. sorry if incomprehensible. ask if I need to clarify.

Yeah, I think I follow... Question, though - what version is it? Is it DFVD/DF2010, or the older 31.25?

I don't think I ever quite tried doing this (or thought of it), as I always build my depots aboveground (though walled in). It makes sense, I suppose... nice idea there. =) I'll have to test it out for myself.

originally tried it in 2010, and it worked. I commented in a thread few weeks ago talkin bout it. just tried new version, also works. I dunno how to do spoilers or id try to draw it out.

edit:you can also maximiZe this by having multiple single tile cut outs around the edge. I think the most I had was nine.

So the diagram should look something like this?

Spoiler: key (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: setup (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Build Cage (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Unbuild Cage (click to show/hide)

When a cage is unbuilt, the cage item doesn't appear on the same spot it was built, so if you block off where the cage can fall except for the trade depot, it will fall on the trade depot, and once a dwarf touches it it can be sold. I'd recommend not allowing whatever animal is caged into your animal stockpile while doing this, to make sure the cage doesn't immediately get hauled away once it's unbuilt.

yes. exactly, Ty twilight for the diagram. I should note, I don't think you get much for the creature, if anything. I don't know the mechanics to it all. I just know I had seen it before that untamed creatures can't be sold, yet I knew I had done it.

hope this lily bit of info helps someone, or not I don't care, just wanted to feel smart for thinkin of this. : p

If this works... Amazing...

You helped at least one person, and hurt a whole lot of elves. Next step is to cage some disease carrying FB's with web...

(Salt water being drinkable with wells, the ability to sell caged animals, what next?)

Confirm this and we'll Relativity it.  This is amazing news.  Does the caged creature's value count towards the trade, or just the value of the cage?  Items the creature is wearing?  Is selling whole goblins now an effective economy?

if the wild animals aren't selling for much, could it be that untamed creatures have a value modifier of x0, and the sell price is then just whatever the cage would sell for?

If you're testing this, try having a cage identical to the one the animal being sold is in, and see if there's a difference in the price between them.

Can't we just dump cages to the depot? I remember dumped goblins remain in cages.

ok, at the trade screen right now. a normal wood cage withal peregrine falcon goes for 35ur. a -cage- goes for 20ur. so maybe untamed creatures do sell for some. gonna try to sell an invader or other hostile as soon as I get one.

Can you provide us with some screencaps to show that it is indeed an untame creature being traded?

What exactly do you mean by "touch"? I can't seem to get it to work... or perhaps you're simply not allowed to sell invaders.  :(
