Was it possible to use the mouse for designations in DF2010?

Because it is in the new version. I hadn't noticed it in 2010, though. Could have missed it.

Anyway, now I can click on the map and it designates it for mining (or channelling, or whatever), when I have that option selected.

Yes.  In the previous version, 40, even.  :)

Yeah, that's been in there since the 2D version.

In DF2010 it only worked in the top left corner for me. :'(

Oops.  :-[

I never use the mouse. . .even when I know you can (like on the military screen).

You were zoomed out too much; in fullscreen mode the mouse can only be used up to a certain zoom level, after that the game has invisible boundaries beyond which it cannot register the mouse clicks.

You can use it on the military screen!?!?

As you've already been told, yes.

However, on a somewhat related subject, I find myself only ever using the mouse for one-square designations. When better mouse support is added (ideally something like that one game about goblins, but no less than rectangular designation) I'll bet I will start using it more, though.

On the other hand, perhaps not. I use vim as a text editor and Pentadactyl (in Firefox) as a browser, so I'm already quite accustomed to using the keyboard to operate my computer.

The mouse can be really useful if you make a single tile staircase several floors tall.

When designating burrows likw this, the game allows you to change the size of the "brush". Why this isn't the case for regular designations, I don't know.

It's also worth noting that a rightclick moves the designation cursor. Using this with Enter allows you to select large rectangles quickly and accurately.
