Giant Mosquitos
« on: February 15, 2012, 09:27:03 pm »

So, I have not been playing DF too much recently because I have been busy and I was waiting for the update. I have started playing again and am beginning to get used to it again, although I have already flooding one fortress by accident. I am doing really well in my third fortress that I have made since the update (the first two had horrible accidents early on due to flooding and forgetting food and having a downward spiral). But suddenly when I was checking to see why my miner was not digging (he was on break of course) I couldnt help but notice that there was 158 in the "Others" category. Below are some screen shots, I hope they drop dead from the scorching heat or just leave because I need to get some woodcutting done ;)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I hope this is not a glitch because personally I like the idea of Mosquitos being in large swarms! (and it just adds to the fun)

I have a rather good CPU on my laptop (second gen intel i7) so since my population was still at 7, I did not get any lag

Someone posted a fix for this in Modding. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=100910.0

I find it funny that until now, no one (including myself) stopped to consider the absurdity of a submarine in which the crew cabin is filled with water and the crew is drowning when everything is working properly.

Personally I think it adds just one more element of fun to the game, I chose maximum savagery on my world so I expect stuff like this to happen =)

Wouldn't kind the skeeter hordes if they weren't so aggressive. But they've "pushed" more than a few of my dwares' heads in already. Tough buggers.

How tough are they in terms of resistance to crossbow bolts? I wonder if goblin sieges will show up riding them...

That is something I need to test out. I actually saved and exited right after taking the screen shots, but I plan on continuing at some point tomorrow. The only problem is that at that point, I have not even had my first migration so with my 7 dwarfs I need to probably hide underground and hope they go away without too much trouble, or I could just for fun send my tiny starter militia out to see what they can do and hope they do not get swarmed ;)

Why would you not want swarms of deadly giant insects? This is dwarf fortress, difficulty isn't the point, vision is.

Luckily for me the Mosquitos left after looping around once. My fortress entrance is near the middle and is a down stair and I had not built my upper defenses yet so I am glad the mosquitos did not go to the middle. Just as a note, I played a little today and had a master stonecarver migrate in the first migration and I had him make hundreds of stone crafts so he is now legendary and I sold them all to buy most of what was in the first caravan. I always find it a good idea to have stuff that you may not even think of using because you never know when someone will want it for one of their crazy inventions when they withdraw from society! Maybe someone will make a gold warhammer with that gold bar and cover it in bands of silk cloth which I can then use to combat the hoards of mosquitos in the future ;)

its good that it is being fixed, but it was quite funny to see a massive swarm circle around then fly away, as I mentioned previously, I think this is a good thing rather than bad, although for people with not as good cpu's the lag may make it not good.

Also, fun note: If you remove their [FLIER] tag while the swarm is airborne (i removed it from the normal mosquitos, because hell i already hate them in real life, don't want to sic them on my dorfs), your place with be carpet bombed by giant mosquitos, many of which explode because of their altitude. It is a massively glorious sight, i must say. Kind of risky if your entrance isn't closed, though. The lack of flying also significantly improved my FPS when i "fixed" it. c:

Mosquito horde vs Clown horde. I wonder...

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
