Diggles: The Myth of Fenris (Restart)
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:16:57 pm »

It's also know as Wiggles (German) or Gnomy (Russian)

If you don't know what Diggles is, you can find some info in the previous thread that's author is now inactive:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=68081.0

The main reason I am creating this thread, is because almost every other resource on the internet is gone. Dial 404 on your phone, and you will know where the Diggles are now. Lots of inactive forums, empty chats and so on. So I want to gather all of the remaining forces and do something about it.

One of Diggles down side is that it has tons of game breaking glitches and the patches are available only for German language versions, but I already found out some way to fix it. The other problem is that all of the fun things, like console commands and information about some customization is gone with most of the older forums.

This forum is ground zero of this glorious game's rebirth in 2012, but since there is so much about this game, I doubt it would be efficient to keep all of the information only here, so I am already some things with GoogleDocs- easy to edit real-time. I'm glad I am not the only one interested in this game.

Stuff achievable:

Playing the patched German version in English:

Use custom settings for Diggles:

Using console to create stuff:

Change textures and imgaes:

Change music and sounds:

Customize text:

The things that are still in progress of being achieved:

Custom maps:

Custom game types and more players:

Full understanding of console commands and scripts:

Gameplay improvements:

Make custom versions:

What could help improved the progress:

Anyone could really help by directing your known Diggle fans to this page.

If we get enough people, we should consider a full, freely hosted forum, to have better flexibility.

Get some professional programmers. I am just a hobbyist, who knows what is a function and a bit of mathematical skills.

Track down any developers who could give us if not the original codes, maybe some tips of how to open some of the files to be able to edit them.

Thanks PikKirby for creating a very nice video about Diggles:

There is still some German sites active:
http://wiggles.foren-city.de/ (forum)
http://wiggles.ruka.at/ (a site that is probably made by the original developers)
The German forum has so many resources, but I don't really understand everything they say and I can't register to the site, if anyone has any luck contacting the admins, please tell that I can't log in.

This post will be updated regularly. Contact me or write here for any details about this game, tho the older forum could still be active for a few days.

Some names of the topics are English-like, but there is enormous amount of console commands, they are also doing some map/texture modifications etc. And their resources are still available. There is a map editor and stuff. I think even the original developers visit that site, because some stuff is written that only a dev would know. F.E.

The 5 FPS bug is a protection thing. A today's alternative is Arma's II protection, when you loose aim and get random bugs.

I guess some crackers knew the 5FPS bug and fixed it (Germans) and those who cracked international version... The 5FPS bug at least for me came only after 4 days of playing so that is very misleading for defining the cause.

I finally got this game to run in Windows 7 64 bit. some of the things I had to do.

1. Apply the patch for the 10844 patch for german version. This creates a new exe called wiggles.exe.
2. I had to modify the registry to have a wiggles key instead of a diggles key. This works with the new wiggles.exe and lets you specify the language, and performance settings and have them actually work with the new exe. I used the same registry settings posted in the prior thread with the minor change to the wiggles key, instead of  the diggles key.
3. To get voice/music working (I was stuck with only sound effects). It looks like the new exe needs a file called wighelper.exe. You have it in your directory already called dighelper.exe. Just copy and change the name. I also had to change the compatibility on the wighelper.exe to allow admin permissions, and windows 2000 compatibility.

Once that was all set, I was able to run the wiggles.exe, get my sound and voices, and play through the first world. Working on the second one right now. Haven't seen any issues so far.

No I will admit that the game's largest fault is probably just how insanely long it can take with everything you can build. (You can play for days and not get to the top of the tech tree)

Its second most annoying fault is the fact that you can hurt yourself pretty badly by digging, because only resources you have the tech for will show up.

The only reason I care is because I honestly really like this game in just how alive it makes the inhabitants feel.

Hi, I have got a problem.

I did install Wiggles and could play it with the provided crack till the game "crashed".
After that I could not start it in anyway.
I know the free time is up, checked that, maybe I should not have done that, but the game does not start with any patch or crack.
If I patch it and start the game, there is a black screen(on which the loading screen shoudl follow) for a second and then I get a windows error that wiggles does not function and that windows is looking for a solution.

I did try wiggles and diggles exe with wifferent cracks ans patches, I did change the compatibility mode to 98, 2000 and XP, started it with admin rights and desktop configuration mode(I do not know what this is called in english) but nothing worked so far.

Help me Obiwan, you are my last hope.

Edit:
What do you mean with that?

Edit2:
I did own a copy but I accedently killed it while moving into my new home.
I would buy another copy but since I do not know if I have the same problems with it ...

The biggest gameplay thing that annoyed me in this game was how quickly the diggles age. They barely have time to even learn enough skills to discover stuff once you get to the higher points of the tech tree before they hit the bucket. Is there any way to prevent them from aging past adult stage, without using the potions of youth that just make them babies again anyways?

No, that is sort of the point and one of the reasons why the game is so cripplingly slow.

Sooooo.... Should I try this?
How easy is this to get setup and started?
How easy is it to learn?
How deep is it(gameplay wise)?
Could I just play DF and get a equal or better experience?
