Useless Immigrants?
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:12:35 pm »

Hey folks! I'm mostly posting this to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar since upgrading to the latest version.

In my latest wave of immigrants, I got a decent number of new recruits to help me out, but the first two that came to visit confused me. They're definitely useless immigrants - and no, I don't mean soapmakers or legendary milkers. They're historical figures, one used to be a ranger (now a beekeeper) and the other a scout (now a brewer), who at one point had two children (both dying in the same year they were born). They're chilling at the edge of the map, both using the @ symbol instead of the normal dwarf one.

Has anyone else had this happen?

'tis Mid-Autumn of the first year of the fort; we haven't had any caravans yet. The ranger is wearing some armor, but neither of them have weapons. In the unit menu, they're showing up as "Friendly" under the Other category.

Are they dwarves? I know this happens typically with humans and elves who think they're dwarves.

Couldn't that have loyalty issues?

If they are explicitly from your civ, yes. Otherwise even friendly creatures can be flat massacred with no reprecussions. I know this from expierience.

Could've glitched and sent dwarves from another civ by accident. But there's also the "Let gobo the goblin kill them for me" approach.

I've only seen the @ symbols once, when I modded dwarves with PET token (removed after worldgen), the ones i bought from embark were regular but "tame", and the ones bought from caravans were friendly and used the @ symbol. When uncaged, some seemed to glitch to regular after a bit, and some others made a bee-line off the edge of the map ;D

Surround them with cage traps, hope something spooks then, then do some !!!SCIENCE!!! with the quitters.

One of the very first things I did when they showed up was designate a meeting zone to see if they'd go for it. They did not.

what do members of the Dwarven caravans look like to you then?

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

Maybe they're just "wandering the wilds" as the legends often say that dwarves do.

With the new system that keeps track of where everything and everyone is ... I don't see why random people can't just stroll into your fort and out again.

You know what, that's a possibility. You're playing host to adventurers!
