Hello.
By mistake I dropped my only backpack and now I can't pick up anything. Is there a solution? Thanks.

Drop one of the things you are carrying (weapon/shield), then pick up the backpack and [w]ear it.

I've been away from the game for so long and it's changed so much that I guess I'm a newb again. Shucks!

I have some specific ideas in mind but not sure if they'll work. If I build a fortress in a dwarven civilization then start an adventure as a dwarf from that civilization, is there any chance I'll start at the fortress, or will I always start in a human town no matter what? I wish I could at least start at the mountainhomes. It'd save me a lot of traveling.

Also, can I retire an adventurer in an abandoned fortress? Or is there some way to mark the fortress as a town so that it will let me treat it as such for adventures? If I do retire in a town, will my character stay where I left them or will they wander around and be hard to find later?

Is DFHack updated for the latest version? Can I mark fortresses as lairs still so items don't scatter?

I'm sure I'll come up with more later. Thanks!

EDIT: One more - how do I find quests? I've asked about 30 different commoners and they all say they have no need of me. But the leaders just laugh at my lack of skill. Is the region just too peaceful or something?

EDIT 2: And another... I finally got a quest to kill a criminal in the dungeon. I followed the TSK directions until it gave me the *** but I don't see any dungeon. I can't find anything! No hole in the ground, no building, nothing. Where the hell is it? What do dungeons look like? Is it a bug or am I totally missing something?

If you edit dwarf entity raws that they build cities instead of "detailed_cavern" you can start in a dwarf area, otherwise, nope. You can retire at the site of a mountainhome though, even though no buildings are visible. I don't think you'll ever start out at an abandoned fort. It's abandoned, right?

your dwarf will stay in the town, but might move to a house somewhere, I'm not too sure on this.

Yes and yes

probably. maybe you already solved their only trouble. Move on to the next village.

Dungeons are underneath the castle, probably somewhere near the center of a city. Entrance is through the central keep. Usually lots of goodies in the caslte too, though not often dwarf sized.

Finally decided to give adventure mode a try. Made my first character without checking the wiki quickstart first and thought I was doing fairly well with my dwarf hero (killed three necromancers single-handedly.) But then I was caught outside after dark on the third day by a bogeyman. Second character is more in line with what the wiki suggests, and I actually got two companions (after killing a bunch of zombies.) But now I'm confused about the companions.
  • How do you feed them, or do you even have to?
  • Is it normal for them to constantly fall down when you wake up at dawn?
  • How do you rescue them if they're floundering in a river?
  • Is there a way to find animals to hunt from the travel map, or do you just have to take a chance?
  • The capital seems to be a walled fortress rather than a town. Didn't notice any shops or other buildings, just guard towers connected by walls. Is this normal?
I came up with a work-around for #3 when I noticed that moving "on top" of a companion displaces them, usually in the direction you approached from. Is this the only way?

When i do that on their right foot, i can lock she's right ankle.  Why i can't lock left ankle? I'm not sure about she's vampirity, but when i tried strangle throad, shes don't passed out.

Dwarven wine is a little bit like good chicken soup:  solid at room temperature.

How do you feed them, or do you even have to?

Can't. Nope. Unless you're playing the very first release of .34, in which case you'd better start thinking up a use for a bunch of emaciated corpses.

Is it normal for them to constantly fall down when you wake up at dawn?

Yes. They're unconscious but they start out standing sometimes. Just think of it as matudinal narcolepsy.

How do you rescue them if they're floundering in a river?

Moving into the square they're in works, as you said. Alt-move if they're in water and you're not. This is difficult with a large group of companions. If it's just a few tiles of water (2 or 3?) they'll maybe be able to eventually get out on their own. You can teach them to swim by repeatedly going through a narrow murky pool or a small river.

Is there a way to find animals to hunt from the travel map, or do you just have to take a chance?

Nope. Yep.

The capital seems to be a walled fortress rather than a town. Didn't notice any shops or other buildings, just guard towers connected by walls. Is this normal?

Fortresses are often capitals. Rarely you will see a town with a keep and little else. You should be able to tell from the symbols on the travel map.

How about this one: how many quests do you have to fulfill to become something more than a peasant? They get repetitive really fast when it's just "go into the dungeons and kill criminal x" over and over again.
