New Version, New Namespace
« on: February 14, 2012, 09:49:51 pm »

Back when version 0.31 was released, a new namespace was created on the wiki (so that the existing content from 40d and earlier could be preserved), and it was named "DF2010" because that's presumably what people had been calling it up until then. Since version 0.34 is not save-compatible with earlier versions, it also gets a new namespace on the wiki, but since it hasn't had a "nickname" like 0.31 did, we don't know what to call it, so the wiki's been temporarily locked until we decide (so people don't start modifying the existing pages).

Ideas that have been proposed on IRC:
* DF2012 - No better than DF2010, really.
* FEB2012 - Emi's idea. I don't care for it
* V34 - obvious, but has the potential issue that Toady might release 0.35 (or later) and maintain save compatibility, thus necessitating renaming it in the future.
* Rel4 - Going by savegame compatibility, versions 0.21.93.19a thru 0.23.130.23a (the 2D ones) were "release 1", 0.27.169.32a thru 0.28.181.40d were "release 2", and 0.31.01 thru 0.31.25 were "release 3", so version 0.34.01 is the first of "release 4".

Along with choosing a name for the new version's namespace, it's also an option to rename the existing namespaces. 23a and 40d are well-known enough that they can probably stay as-is, but "DF2010" could really stand to be changed to something better.

Any suggestions are welcome - the sooner we decide, the sooner the wiki can be re-opened to editing.

What about DFVD? Or is that just going to stay as a fan nickname?

I asked Toady about it around when v31 was released. He said v31 worked for him. I'm fine with v34.

You could always go by greek letters, we're past the confusing alpha-beta bit with development terms.

Could also just go down the list of dwarven words.

Im not a wiki person, so I know little of the system. I however, can offer a few suggestions, if you'd like to hear them.

You probably should do a poll, and make sure its linked to the wiki website and the forums.

You should also uniform the naming system across ALL versions, as to keep it information freindly.

As much as I PERSONALLY like 2012, I do believe it'd be wise to to ensure the naming scheme is uniform and informative, as per a wiki's nature.

As for why both forums and wiki, it'll help get a much larger, general opinion, to the most easily understandable term and naming scheme.

I'm in favour of DF2012. It's simple, it lets you easily see when it came out and distinguish that it's the current version.

I agree about the uniform naming scheme. Personally, I think that it is rather likely the big save-breaking releases with significant changes are going to be after long droughts like this one, and 2010 before it. Hence, I feel DF2012 is a solid choice.

Although to be honest, I don't know how many players are going to be hanging on to their precious DF2010 games like they did with 40d. This is a big save-breaking release, but it isn't the significant difference 2010 was from 40d, or 40d from 23a.

Ethier way, a poll needs to be done, and for now, a placeholder put in place.

Yeah, make a temporary placeholder and put a poll on the wiki main page. Let's get the wiki juice flowing asap!
