I just found out what creeping ash does. It instantly turned my dwarfs into zombies then they became hostile and killed everything.
I don't think the names are related to the effect. You have the option to set up 1000 different kinds of evil mists so unless Toady progammed 1000 individual names they they're procedurally generated and random.

This is ToadyOne we're talking about here.

You never know.

Other then that, I agree, its probably randomly generated. That's just how things are done in dwarf fortress, generally.

Hm. Well I like my random mist then. I got creeping ash. It feels like a blizzard or sand storm where you have to rush your dwarves below ground or they turn into zombies. At least in my case.
On an unrelated note, does anybody know anything new about evil rain? I think that has potential to be awesome as well.

I have a wealth of experience. Evil Rain is either blood (harmless) or some horrible guck: filth, ooze, goo with some disgusting acronym that inflicts a random syndrome. The big difference between rain and mist is that rain covers the entire map very quickly. It can make it very difficult to start on an evil embark.

On certain creatures only a certain weapon type will work i.e. vampires, werewolves.

I can this confirm to be partially false. I was able to kill a were-something (he never transformed during the fight) with a bronze sword although he was "cut more deeply" (so said the person who sent me to kill him) by iron. Hitting him with my iron shield didn't seem to do anything out of the ordinary for what I'd expect the effect to be on a human. I recall from the devlog that blunt attacks were magnified by the damage multiplier too, but maybe that was changed later on.

I don't know if weapon materials that are not the creature's weakness are actually less effective, or just normal.

Also:
- In adventure mode, vampires can become the law-giver of a civilization. If accused of being a night creature, they'll attack you, but attacking them will not make the civilization's other members hostile. (I was helped out by two other humans, in my case.)
- Accusing a non-night-creature does nothing as far as I can tell.
- An amusing fact, if nothing else: if paralytic/unconsciousness-causing rain occurs in a biome containing flocks of birds, they'll fall from the sky and occasionally explode on impact (depending on how high up they fly). This may be a decent way of getting meat, if the rain can be avoided. On the other hand, the dismembered bird parts might reanimate shortly after, although I'm unsure of how that works.
- Although werecreatures can probably transform in adventure mode, it's seemingly very unlikely to come across them at the right time, so they tend to be in human form when you encounter them in their lairs.

Things to check for:
- Can poison/blood rain go through grates?
- Can mist change Z-levels (e.g. going down the fortress stairs)? Does it evaporate once it goes underground, or does it stay there for a while?

Werewolves in human form do not get the benefits of their werewolf immunities, it seems, and I've never seen a werewolf in creature form.

I've heard that they attack in fortress mode during their respective moon cycles. Can anyone confirm that?

Before he was killed by the undead my mason made a statue of a dwarf slaying a zombie roc in a duel, so zombie megabeasts might be a thing.

I don't know if this is new, but...  In adventure mode, you need to eat and drink again.  I'd butchered a few wolves, but my water ran out quickly.  I figured out that you can use the wells located inside human towns by standing next to them and pressing "u".  This will lower and raise the bucket.  You can then "e" to consume water directly from the well, or you can "I" and select your waterskin, and refill your flask from the well.  You can also refill your flask from any body of water, but murky pools and such will give you stagnant water.  This doesn't really mater, because you have no happiness score so murky drinks just fine.

I have not tested if you can fill a container with blood, and human towns don't have booze barrels to test with either.

I've seen zombie rocs before this version. They've been there for a while, but they now have the new zombie mechanics, of course.

If there is a wall across a field, single tile thick and a single tile high, the mist will sweep right over it. It will first go on top of the wall, then to the other side. I am not sure about two tile tall walls, I don't imagine the outcome would be different.

Citizens

Others (wild animals)
Dead / Missing

Just perusing the legends.
The "first" necromancers learn their art by worshiping a deity, who in turn creates a slab (as was announced, I believe).
