Wayward Roguelike - A HTML5 / Javascript game
« on: February 14, 2012, 02:41:06 pm »

I was just searching for roguelike tutorials in C++, and I stumbled across this on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opqLKvV54RA

It's an graphical roguelike, sandbox-based, with a crafting system and seeks realism(I think). It's on Alpha 1.1. It was not made by me. You can play it here:
http://www.unlok.ca/wayward/

RogueBasin's page:
http://roguebasin.com/index.php/Wayward

Sorry for the lack of information. There is not much to say, but I loved the project.

It is a pretty playable alpha. Lacks documentation, but doens't has a steppy learning curve. I liked it. The most surprising, though, is that it was made with HTML 5 <canvas> and Javascript/jQuery! I will try to add what I know here, eventually. Go check it out!

I will just leave a protip for the starving guys: Use a sharp rock, carve meat, profit!

Post yours score here!
Mine was around 2400.

It's a long way from being what I consider fully playable sadly. not a lot to do at present IMO. But I looove the idea and think with some content fleshed out it'll be great.

Reminds me a lot of Notchs entry to the last Ludum Dare.

Can't work out how to make anything useful, bit annoying.

So uhh.. bump? Anyone actually playing this? It looks pretty neat, and it's updated a few times since this thread was posted.

I just played it, looks nice. Although I can't seem to find any food that doesn't involve cutting down trees. At the same time I've only played once and largely just ran around chopping down every tree I saw and got eaten by bears.

It's pretty fun when you start figuring out how to do shit.

It's less fun when you accidentally navigate away from the webpage and lose the house you were building :|

The 5 walls I was carrying also resulted in me getting eaten by the first monster that came along.

Yeah, now that I know spears are used for fishing and all that it's pretty awesome. Reminds me of notch's ludum dare, like someone earlier in the thread said, although much much more polished. Looking forward to see where it's going.

Now back to trying to get a functional house up.

Also is it just me or can you not cook/open chests you make? I was just using the normal fire you get from fuel and a hand drill, does that not count as a "firepit" or whatever it said? Saw a more structured looking fire in one of the screenshots, so that's probably it.

You need to make a campfire using 5 stone type items and 1 fuel type item.

Just drop an item onto a chest to store it in it, walk into the chest to pull all the items you've stored in it out.
I've figured out a decent amount so far, so feel free to ask any other questions.

Also, the game doesn't save the map once you leave the page, so uhh, don't get too attached to your house :P

Ooooh okay, good to know. And is that even if you save? There's a little save button that I think starts just off the bottom of the options window. Probably, as you didn't mention your skills vanishing.  :P

Yeah, it saves any items you're carrying and any skills you have, but regens the map.

It's a nice feature if you find yourself about to be eaten by a bear, just refresh the page and teleport to a new land :P

It sucks that the game regens a new map everytime. Other than that it's fun.

Beta apparently has map saving, so hopefully that'll be out sooner rather than later.

Also remade the thread here because the OP hasn't logged in since February.

This game seems to have improved since spring. I think it deserves more attention.

Here is the beta 1.0 trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AddGR5MT7lw&list=UU8Xr5cjPAxHHPn6NcaAB-uw
