bandits in cities
« on: February 14, 2012, 11:49:01 am »

Important note:since this is now on the bug tracker, I'm making this an adventure story thread
to read my encounter with the bug that started the topic -->
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will use this post to keep you guys up to date on my adventures rather than make endless posts :p

I began a new adventure, this time as a human.
As luck would have it, I found a warehouse filled with crap gently used goods for the needy
I managed to scrounge up a full set of iron armor after several minutes of sifting through the mountain of goods plus a couple good weapons

After wandering a bit, I found a market.  After buying some food to make sure I'd be fine on my journey, I decided to ask the farmer if there was anything I could help with.
He informed me that over a hundred townspeople had been killed by a vampire.  He also gave me a mysterious clue: I was to go to the local keep.

Naturally I went there and began my search.  Never in a million years did I expect to find such a terrifying piece of evidence.
I found a figurine carved out of giant hedgehog bone.  On this otherwise unremarkable figure was carved an image of the very beast I was hunting.  It showed her ascending to the position of law-giver.  The very same man I had walked past moments ago.  Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the woman was wearing hundreds of pieces of jewelry made from the remains of sentient beings.  Slightly obvious in retrospect, actually.  Naturally I went to confront this monstrosity.
the confrontation:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The townsfolk are glad to be rid of the monster.  I am glad to continue exploring.
Shortly after leaving the keep I find a massive hole in the middle of the city.  Beautifully carved pillars surround this place.
It is a tomb.  There are so many corpses, and I have not yet explored the whole thing.
This is likely the resting place of those slain by the vampire as well as an explanation for all the empty shops around here.
I shall remember this place for when I have learned the secrets of life and death.  Traps infest the lower levels; I must be cautious.
I have stumbled upon something evil, and it has placed a curse on me.  I shall worry about that later.  First, I must deal with this monster.

I am striking at it, but my blows are glancing off of its armor. I may have to be creative.
I have severed the creature's hands and feet, yet it still attacks.
Throwing my shield at it has done little to damage the creature, though I now have a plan.
Thinking quickly, I grab its helmet.  After a brief struggle, I have gained possession of it.
While attempting to repeat the feat with its mail shirt, the severed hands have reanimated.
Also it bit me through several layers of armor (wat?)
To break its hold I hit it in the head with my sword; it is rather effective.  A little too effective, actually, as my sword is now stuck.
We have backed up towards the traps, one of which takes a shot at the animate hands
Though the hands are bleeding to death, the mummy continues to summon them back.
I have now cut off some more of the mummy's bits and bobs; this is growing tedious.
A few more blows traded. It bit me in the right hand, tearing the fat (why do I even bother wearing armor?)
Out of annoyance, I throw the pike I keep in my backpack, causing the mummy to lose another half a leg.
Son of a bitch bit me in the hand FRACTURING THE BONE.
IT. IS. ON.
welp. it bit off my right hand.
At this point I just want to kill it before I die.
the constantly reanimated right hand has scratched me in the head, shattering my skull, tearing the brain
I am dead.

conclusion: armor does nothing. at all. against a pair of hands. or teeth. but a limbless mummy is agile enough to dodge a hail of sword strikes.

look to my next post where I will attempt to avenge myself, or go on another adventure altogether, depending on where I spawn.

There are bandits in town. That is not a bug. You can sometimes get quest to kill them.

What is a bug is that the entire civilization gets hostile once you attack them.
I submitted it to the big tracker just a few minutes ago.

I figured they were supposed to be hiding in the cities, but yeah suddenly getting attacked by townsfolk for self defence is disconcerting >_>

Time for the next installment of: I TRY NOT TO DIE HORRIBLY!

Ulet Savagenames begins his journey

Oh goody, a tomb filled with crap. I manage to find some valuables to trade in town. I also found a massive axe ^_^
I have found a room with slabs dedicated to people who were killed by a variety of monsters. thrilling.
Ah, I have found the wonders hidden here: an entire room filled with weapons, armor, and gems.
A spearman has appeared seemingly out of nowhere.  After watching me for a bit, he has attacked.
A short way into the fight, a second one comes to aid the first one.
I have been stabbed in the leg; this is going poorly.
None of my blows are landing; they are worthy opponents indeed.
I have scrambled around the room, picking up bits of armor completing my set, almost
I have exchanged my great axe for a regular one.
For all my efforts, they seem to be completely unfazed.
Finally, I have severed the nerves in one of their hands. This one should fall much quicker without his shield.
He bleeds profusely as men are want to do after taking an axe to the lung.
The other one is in much the same position now, save for the axe I have put through his skull.
I am now free to continue looking for loot.
My decision to continue on while sneaking was a good one. I have found a bowman waiting in the next room.
There is also a lasher and a pikeman in here.
Our battle is fierce, but I am gaining the upper hand
The Bowman is dead, and all of us have moderate injuries.
The lasher and I are fighting in the previous room.  He seems to parry EVERY SINGLE BLOW!
Finally, he bled to death.
Sneaking, I pick up the archer's arrows and throw them until the pikeman passes out.
I cut off his head.

I have found a holy man, and he has agreed to let me rest a while.
Venturing back into the depths of the tomb I come across another treasure room, complete with more bandits. yay
After a long and slightly boring fight, they are dead.
Taking the rest of the gems, I decide to continue exploring.
I cross paths with a couple of bandits who escaped my wrath earlier; they are quickly dispatched.
Venturing further into the bowels of this tomb, I find still more bandits plus one other.
It is the boss.

His minions fell quickly but now I must face the boss of these persistent bandits.
The Boss and I have been dueling for a while now.
No one has landed a blow.  I have even thrown a couple of corpses at him.
A lucky blow.  I have cut off his sword arm, leaving him helpless and bleeding.
A stab to the lung limits what he can do quite a bit.  He should make his peace with the forces of the world, for now he must meet them.
I have removed his other arm so that he may know my prowess as a warrior.

After killing the bandit leader I continued my search.
There were still quite a few bandits skulking about, but they all fell without issue.
I have finished exploring this tomb, unwilling to cart back even a fraction of the wealth contained, for I already have far more than I shall ever need.
Trading in some of the stuff I found. I now have about 6000 coins. probably more.

Having received several new quests, I go to the keep to find some allies.
I first meet with the lady (courtesy, you know)
She has given me a quest of great importance: I must find and slay a great bandit chief.
I intend to finish the lesser quests first as such a figure must be well guarded indeed.
killed some more bandits, everything was going well
then bam, bolt to the head
dead.

I got a quest for a bandit in a bone carver's shop - found the bone carvers doing their best to kill him, I was able to finish him off and complete the quest without the civilization going hostile, so apparently it's not always horrible bugged. Still odd though, to track down a bandit and find some random merchants already locked in mortal combat with him - you'd think he'd find a better place to 'hide', like an abandoned building or something.
