Anyone interested in some Academia?
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:30:07 am »

https://6002x.mitx.mit.edu/

Basically, MIT are trying out some online only courses. This first one is to do with electronic engineering, which is a field I have not done any work in since early undergraduate days (save for some DC circuitsand AC theory lecturing), and I am sorely tempted to get in on this. Anyone else interested? A Bay12 study group could be quite a novel undertaking...

Oh, its free, totally online (all course resources), 100% legit and has accreditation at the end. MIT state that a 10 hour weekly commitment is needed to complete this course, which might put some of you off.

This is really cool.  Online learning sources like this aren't anything new.  Ones with full accreditation are.

That is cool. Sadly, this course would probably be so far over my head that I'd be writing naughty graffiti on its soft underbelly. I'm no slouch in the hard sciences, but the pre-reqs sounded daunting.

Looks very interesting, but I've already taken equivalent course work at my own university.  It doesn't look like it covers anything I don't already know.

What other courses are avaiable? (And, do you get certifications out of this?)

None as of yet, though the BBC News website led me to belive that Maths and Physics courses are in the pipeline if this proves successful. Accreditation is mentioned in my OP and on the page linked in it.

Maybe I'll look in this once the classes I've paid for are in order. You can never have enough degrees... But physics and electronics isn't quite what I'm aiming for at the moment. Related, but money-making education comes before academic. 10 hours a week is also daunting.

Props for MIT, though. I'm really liking the free education things that are beginning to pop up. Maybe we'll see enough of this where folks can get a degree without worrying about cash.

Sounds like an interesting experiment at least, and I have the time. I'll sign up shortly.

If I could do it over the summer, I'd be in all the way for the EE and physics stuff.

Same here - hopefully there will be some time flexability, as until my summer break I have a full on load of teaching and lecturing.

Study group sounds interesting.  I have some engineering background so I could pull my own weight and I tend to work well in groups.

Ha, awesome, just signed up. I've been wanting to do a comp science one for a while. Or I guess brush up on circuit design, RF electronics and engineering math. Online courses are awesome, but so far, most of them have been dodgy, and laughed at by potential employers.

Well, it looks to be pretty neat. Problem being that I've already been doing this stuff for the past four years in my Electronics class, and it doesn't look like it goes any further than what I just finished today. (Circuit Analysis and Operational Amplifiers.) If you folks want me to join the study group, though, I'd be willing to help out.

So today is day 1 of the course.

Just to warn people, they are requiring an AP level physics education. If anyone doesn't have that but wants to follow along I'd be happy to help out where possible, and I'm pretty sure we have enough physics education on this board to cover most questions. I'm going to be away for a few days from Wednesday, so I'm going to try to churn through much/most of week 1's work tonight.

Got to say, I'm loving the video player they have going, even if it is just a YouTube wrapper. Adjustable speed (from 0.75x to 1.5x) and complete closed captions. I'm running at 1.25x right now and it's pretty easy to follow with the subtitles. I kinda wish some of my undergraduate lectures came like this. Also wish that YouTube had the variable speed built in for all videos.
