Opinions on DFhack?
« on: February 13, 2012, 05:25:42 pm »

So i have been playing dwarf fortress for sometime now, and for about half of that time i have been using DFhack.

in my opinion some of its functions are outright cheating, while others just answer a hole in game logic quite effectively.

ones i think are fair:

1. autodump (5 year hauling jobs, no thanks.)
2. vdig (seriously i can do the same thing myself, just with more annoyance)
3. deramp (i miss old channels)

ones i am iffy about using.

1. reveal (kinda ruins alot of Fun)
2. DFprospector (same as above, but can save you from wasting time on an embark that has nothing but cassiterite and microline.)

and the rest I feel are either cheating or just suck the fun out of the game. (i likely have a few that actually go on the lists above, but i forgot them.)

opinions?

You forgot Fastdwarf. That is the best thing ever at a low framerate, although it makes your dwarves rape everything by making them overexerted from blocking.

that one may go on the iffy list, but as you said its severely gamebreaking. (also i use masterwork so FPS is no problem)

Cleaning also comes in useful or all those blood splatters and vomit stains.

I will use it when the need arises and my dwarves can't handle it themselves.  However, I use it as little as possible.

About the most extreme I'll do is if a map has literally NO water (it can happen if your caverns are unluckily dry) I may use DFhack liquids to fill a small well for my hospital.  However, in that case, if the map has any water at all, no matter how hard it is to get, I will get it legitly.

Strictly speaking one can actually get the same effect simply by given the dwarves the SPEED:0 tag; I think this is actually what fastdwarf does...

vdig removes player tedium, the dwarves still have to do the work (right?  i don't actually any of them much).  Most of the others actually manipulate the world outside the !!LAWS OF NATURE!!, which puts them in a different category.  likewise there's a difference between cleanmap to fix fps vs. to clear a monster syndrome.

... That being said, there's no cheating in single player.

I love DFHack. People who don't are just stubborn. And in denial.

I think it really depends on your way of playing the game. I mean nearly everything in df can be cheating when you exaggerate it to much (like cage traps, mass-production of certain good for caravan trading etc.). The same with dfhack. For example I once had not the time for building up a big fort, so I used liquids and tiletypes for speeding up the build time a bit. From one point thats hacking, but from the other it was my only way because the game doesn't let me take over a already existing fort.
Other example: With Runesmith(not dfhack) you can turn every dwarf into a hostile. But maybe you have an interesting role playing going on and need a murder to keep the story exiting. DF isn't feasible of that, so you have to do that. But thats not cheating.
Df is not a game where you collect points for your acting,  it's a story and you intervene where you think it might be necessary.

i only downloaded dfhack recently so i haven't actually used a lot of the stuff but as far as opinions go i think i would be ok with things like any of the digging commands or anything that just makes stuff easier to accomplish are fine maybe not quite in the spirit of the game but not cheating. i also like stonesense and its the best way to update it these days df2minecraft is a cool thing even if it doesn't really work all that well. the stuff that is cheating is stuff that you cant normally do like adding in liquids or fastdwarf. reveal is ok i guess because it doesn't actually CHANGE the materials just tells you where they are but it feels weird to me. all that said though i agree with the idea of there being no real way to cheat in a single player game i mean i think a lot of that stuff would ruin fun but I'm not going to tell people their opinions are wrong that's crazy.

I don't use it.

I think it is cheating. One could say there is no cheating in a single-player video game, but I think there can be; you are evading the true challenge and pure experience the developer set out for you. And, being a bit of a programmer myself, I don't like tampering with something using third-party utensils.

And honestly, what could you possibly need it for? It can only reduce the !!FUN!!!

I use it, but limit its use to only when the gore gets so spread it affects FPS. Its also very useful using the DFusion plug in to get diplomats, guild reps and wagons back in the game. Oh, and the annoying "water in buckets" thing which tends to cripple my soap industries.

So, yea, basically I use it as a cure for niggly bugby behaviour rather than cheat engine.
