Do you use Microsoft Access?
« on: February 13, 2012, 09:47:10 am »

Hey, I thought I'd put this here since I really don't know how to find anyone independently who uses it. If you or your business or website use Microsoft Access, I'd like to give you a short interview about it. It's for my college Microcomputers class, and my group just happened to draw the hardest, (in my opinion,) application to hunt down users of.

We aren't even on the Access chapters yet, so this makes it doubly difficult. I am doing them in advance starting today, what I really need to know are things like why you use it, what you use it for, what applications you use in conjunction with it, etc.

Direct me to the appropriate person in your business or email me at smeeprocket@gmail.com

My name is Amanda Burgoon, if that information is needed.

Probably not; seems to have a good grasp of grammar and words, unlike the spamming bunch.

And this wasn't her first post, either.

On topic: I used MS Access once, when I volunteered doing data entry for an ESL/free education program for latino workers, and all I can say is that I never want to remember that horrid pile of pain ever again.

Learned it in school, and used it once to create a mass-mailing database for Christmas thank-you letters. It was good enough for that, but I wouldn't want to use it for anything more elaborate.

I have used it to prototype databases before I bust out something more serious like SQL server, but I didn't use much of the functionality.

No, not a spammer. Guys! Hand me some more details, anything you can give me. I am desperate. My teammates have been looking for job ads requiring MS Access knowledge, and they can't even find luck there, then we'd know a business that used it. We have ALL tried to hunt down people, and we each need 5 varied sources. I am genuinely interested in the stories you guys mentioned. Just throw me a bit more info. Email me, write it here, please, please.

If you used it for a company, throw me the company name and some info about them as well so I can contact them.

I don't honestly get its use. It's like a souped up excel where, if you prebuild the table, you can import an excel table. I don't see it as particularly valuable.

You’ve stated that you’re doing this for a Microcomputers course.  Are you majoring in a business or accounting program or something along the lines of computer science?

If you’re just looking for sources to use who have experience using Microsoft Access you could try talking to instructors at any local colleges or technical schools in your area with a business school or focus.  Business and accounting programs may have courses that deal with teaching Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access together as a class so you may be able to interview the instructors of those courses to fulfill your requirements.  You could also try for anyone teaching a course focusing on databases.

Those instructors may also have former students they’ve kept in contact over the years with that may be able to give you more direct knowledge of Microsoft Access as it relates to actual use in business application.  That’s a longer shot but possibly worth it.

Good idea, thanks. Yea I am majoring in Computer Science. I'll pursue the few responses I get here and follow up on your lead ideas, very appreciated.
