What's the best way to deal with zombies?
« on: February 13, 2012, 09:10:08 am »

So, I started a new fortress, and decided to set up in a terrifying/haunted forest area. Figured that I'd get some laughs out of it cause the world I'm genned comes from a seed of a particularly harsh 40D game of mine.

And well, its been so long since I played (Stuff interfering), I forgot that zombies show up in these areas. I expected ghosts and such. Thankfully most are trapped by a ravine. Especially the 27 milkfish and 3 Stingray zombies infesting the river. But I have some zombie water-buffalo outside my fort walls drawing ever closer. And I need to get of them.

And I'm not exactly sure what my 7 dwarves can use against them that will work. Any advice?

You could always draft your miners and have the use their picks. They're quite effective. Depends on how lucky you are and how well the zombies fight/ how many there are.

Shoot 'em in the head.

Or on a more serious note, what I would do is draft every single dwarf and try to swarm them through sheer numbers if I didn't have any armed and trained dwarves.

I'd send woodcutters instead of miners.  Better yet, send both.
(I have a preference for axes.)

Undead fish are a chore.
I've never had undead buffalo (I stick to mountains and forests), but their size is probably the biggest threat.
Expect casualties.

Or just wall yourself in and let them pass.
Or, build a drop-trap inside the safe area, then open the gate for them.

I hate undead wildlife.  They become more a nuisance than anything else.

This is why you should embark with at least one military dorf. And maybe a bar of iron or two, but really, a copper bar and a hammer dorf is enough.

Well, I was thinking of trying to slip a dwarf out and put spike traps along the walls and hope that the zombies were stupid enough to come THAT close. But knowing MY luck, and the hell that is MorningDaggers they'll find a way to breed instead and laugh at my attempts. May have no choice but to risk all my dwarves, thank goodness I assigned one of them to be a damn good fighter before embark.

I'll have to deal with them one way or another though, they are hindering my attempts to make a zombie trap bridge. That area where the ravine is that is keeping most of them back is obviously where my Migrants and caravans are going to arrive from. Hopefully my Sieges too.

But I've been lucky so far, I've seen Zombie Sea Aligators, Slugmen, giant capybara, Drakes, Water-buffalo, Wolves, and even a zombie duck. All held back by the ravine. Aside from the ones on my side.

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

Got the Lazy Newb Pack?
Activate Fastdwarf.

Superspeed combat, so much so as that the enemy can't get a hit in, as it's too busy blocking.

I suppose you have a gate?

Well, the wall's do have an access door. But, a full blown gate/entrance like I normally would build. No, I'm still in the early stages of the fortress design and the fort walls that I did build were in a massive hurry once I found out about the zombies. Normally I would have built a multi-stage car-crusher design that would allow sieges to pile in, I could lock em in via flood gates and crush them with bridges. And any that did get through, I would be able to dump into a spike pit via a drawbridge. And also shoot at them from battlements above. Also below from the first floor .

But, that is under ideal design conditions. This was not the case here. The walls are actually very small compared to my normal designs. And I plan to expand, I just have to deal with my current zombie problem first.
