I wish I could get immersed in games like this, but I get nothing. Not from horror movies either for that matter.

Psychological horror is the best horror. That's what games like Amnesia taught me.

Psychological horror is the best horror. That's what games like Amnesia taught me.

This. Too many so-called "scary" games rely too much on jump-scares, and they make it obvious that something's gonna happen (lotta movies suffer from this as well. HURR DURR, SOMEONE HAS THEIR BACK TO A DARK OPEN SPACE, OBVIOUSLY THE MONSTER WILL DRAG THEM AWAY, or the good old "hand slowly reaching from behind which touches someone and they freak out and find out it was just a friend or whatever". Who even does that hand thing IRL anyway? It ever occur to them to say something instead of slowly grabbing someone when it's pretty damn clear their attention is on something?). Dead Space had this, F.E.A.R. had this (though it definitely managed to pull together and unnerve me in the final 10 minutes or so of the game. The fact that i was low on health would've contributed though), and there's probably others i've played that i can't think of off the top of my head.

Whereas these two SCP games are dark as hell, you don't know when something's gonna happen, they make you genuinely terrified to move forwards (or even backwards. I don't go backwards or even look behind me in either game, because i don't know if something will happen and i really don't want to find out the hard way).

I'd play Amnesia, but i can barely bring myself to play this, i'd probably shit a brick if i played Amnesia :P.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

Amnesia was both compelling and a pain to play. I had to stop playing the game every ten to fifteen minutes per hour, and keep myself from getting immersed to minimize the fear factor.

I absolutely hated, or rather, feared the chase scenes with the doors. Keep frantically opening them, and discovering they don't open forwards.

In Amnesia, there was a very long flooded corridor which you had to run away from the invisible monster. Boy, that was some I'm-about-to-shit-my-pants moment! Truly one of the most scary moments in the history of horror games. I had to pause the game and take a breather.

Too many so-called "scary" games rely too much on jump-scares.

Dead Space had this, F.E.A.R. had this.

Exactly, Dead Space had so many jump-scare moments it became annoying. That's the way this game is I guess. For me, the fun I had in Dead Space wasn't about horror, it was more about sending limbs flying. In Amnesia, even knowing that you have no way to damage let alone destroying the monster, was a good reason to pause the game every ten minutes.

For those who can't play Amnesia: Play the Penumbra games, made by the same company. They're not as scary, but have a similar atmosphere, and an equally enjoyable story, with a few puzzles of sorts. Not quite as scary, but still terrifying sometimes.
Also, you can actually kill most monsters in Penumbra, by repeatedly bludgeoning them, but it's really hard, usually impossible due to the situation.

Dead Space relied almost purely on jump-scares. The one at the end of the game was the only one that actually scared me. There were two other times that that game scared me:
The first time I saw the slender-morph.
The room full of dead bodies (a dozen or so). I knew that they would all be reanimated by those weird winged things the next time I came in, and I really didn't want that happening, so I stomped off all of the limbs and piled the torsoes on top of the table/altar. (That was not at all a pleasant task.) And then when I came back, all of the bodies were back in their original positions. Not fun.

I suppose I'm saying this just to give more praise to the SCP-087 games and other good horrors. Thank you, lordcooper.

Oh jesus Amnesia and Penumbra.  That water monster was my "NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE" moment.  Penumbra's was hiding in a shipping crate from the dogs.

Both those games have genuinely unexpected horrors.

I hated the dogs. I tried to hide in the crates, but
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Something that makes Penumbra a bit more scary than Amnesia is that, if the monsters see you, you're probably dead. In Amnesia, you can run away in most situations, and they have to land a few hits before you die. In Penumbra, 2 hits and you die (I think), and there's nowhere to run.

I think I saw the Penumbra series on sale at the local electronics store. Should I get it? And (importantly) will it run on an Intel card?

Penumbra's wonked up save system killed it for me.

"Go to the other side of the scary tunnel system you're in!"

"Okay..." Walk, walk, walk, loading screen, walk, walk, MONSTER DEAD.

"Let's try that again..." Walk, walk, walk, loading screen, walk, walk, sneak past monster, walk, touch door to get to next level, game crashes.

"Screw this."

It was scary at first, and I wanted to know what happened, but once I saw the man behind the curtain, it kinda killed it for me. The fun of being afraid died, and the only thing driving me forward was wanting to know what happens next. Once that happened, I got bored and quit.

I dunno if you'll have the same experience, though. I tend to disconnect myself from horror games to an extent that prevents me from being too scared, since I don't like being scared.

I loved the worm. My favorite part of the game. The chase with the boulder part was pretty great too.

Yours truly. I deserve the bruises. :-[

On topic, I unzipped it, opened the game... took maybe 30 steps down one level... and quit. I might try later, but right now, I don't feel like being unnerved. I've never been quite the same since I decided I'd spend an afternoon looking up the various Lavender Town theme incarnations on youtube.
