The Miscellaneous invention guide for wonderful and mundane above ground fortress survival!

This pretty much sums up the thread.

MISCELLANEOUS INVENTIONS ARC
Part II
ARCHITECTURE INVENTIONS ARC
Part II
Part III (messing around with adventurers and bridges)

Invention 1: Teh hammock

You're in some nasty desert, and oh no! Someone forgot the picks!
(Or you're just a poor hooman.)

What do you do?

Ladies and gentlemen...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

How to make?
Well, step 1: first place your up stair on a flat surface... STEP ONE COMPLETE.
Step 2: place a down stair above the up stair... STEP TWO COMPLETE.
Step 3: Build a floor(s) over the area where you are going to build/designate your lovely bedroom. STEP 3 COMPLETE.
Step 4: Place furniture as requested, and designate room. STEP 4 COMPLETE, YOU SHALL NOW PROFIT FROM LOVELY OPEN AIR ROOMS.

Why bother?
Well normally beds have to be placed indoors. Sometimes, you'll be lacking resources... And may have to make do with what you have. Once you've designated the room size, you can even remove the construction materials and use them to make the next room!

Did I mention the same goes for most furniture?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And before you 'traditional' DF players feel left out, content with massive pits in the ground for fortresses - take note.
You can use this method to effectively path your roads with the coffins of many dead pets and migrants! Hurrah!

Invention 2: Teh great landscaping project
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Is your fortress located on a barren wasteland? Lacking resources to amply defend your humble abode?

I present to you: Teh great landscaping project!

Step 1: ORDER EVERYONE TO DIG SECURE LODGINGS.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Step 2: ORDER EVERYONE TO DIG EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Step 3: Realize your defenses suck.

Step 4: HAVE IDEA

Step 5: Instead of building walls up, ORDER ALL TO DIG WALLS DOWN

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Step 6: Get bored of waiting and begin designating future megafortress site.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Result :
  • 1/3rd of population are miners. (Only 18 Dwarves so far. I think all chances of an industry have been sufficiently crippled, so I can focus on MOAR DIGGING.)
  • 100% of the population in the military. (Stone is nowhere to be found :'( )
  • Terraforms desert.
  • Leaves suspended river, looks really cool, considering weaponizing.
  • Is very inefficient.
  • Could possibly turn into island with one main bridge.

Now, any suggestions on where to go with this? I might just leave it at 1z lvl of digging, but I might then continue and dig myself a fortress. Or rather, dig around where I'll make a fortress.
...Or dig everything but my fortress.
Oh, also taking questions.

Teh great landscaping project PT II

Invention 3: Horrible abomination of nature

Step 1: Mod in Zerglings
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Result: Hate life

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Invention 4: Nabbed straight from the wiki

Step 1: Spill blood in a river
Step 2: Follow blood
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Result: Learn river flow direction

Who needs invention guides when you've got BALLS OF STEEL.

Every Dwarf Fortress Fort is a concentration camp, only without the nazis.

My only qualm with this guide is that your fortress will be practically inaccessible for adventurers. Aside from that it's pretty awesome.

Imagine you're driving a car. Push the gas pedal to the floor. Close your eyes. Remain this way for ten minutes while turning the wheel at whim. This is Dwarf Fortress.
I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

There'll be a 3x3 bridge on the far right, where everything that can't fly (or maybe swim) will have to go.

...I guess you could also take the river into the fort :P

*Edit, or ALT move down the slope... As long as I don't dig deeper :D

Use pumps to keep the river water outside the map while you dig another river bed 2 z-levels down. Keep your fort in your newly-made hill in the center.

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

So... Build a new river? Not quite sure what you mean  :-X

Ok, signed.

WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE?! xD

In more related news, dug some more. 2 Miners got married. All nice and such, until one of them becomes a useless mother :/
Also, there's a kid with a mother...

And no dad...

What to do with this kid?

The biggest problem is that the top of the walls will be soil. That might not work for some OCDers. Also, you do need a decent amount of difference between surface and first cavern level.

But, yeah, the exploit of this strategy was partially why Toady removed channeling from the game  :'(

1. What's wrong with white sand? :P
2. How much difference? Never noticed or had this problem before...

You are not actually channeling. You are actually just digging upwards ramps. The old channeling function did not leave behind ramps; this change doubles the effort needed to dig a landscape into relief.

And I have had cases where I planned to dig out a ten z-level high hall from the earth. Unfortunately, there was a giant cavern 5-zlevels below my embark...

The scene depicted in that picture is marvelous to behold, especially that pipe. It makes me imagine the kinds of sub-level waterways that could be dug out leading out from a river wall. You could have a kind of mix of the hanging gardens and venice, where water flows onto the map from a high up aqueduct, then flows down over the terraces of the fortress the dwarves have dug out from the earth before flowing off the map eventually into massive drainage basins. The irrigated stone would be home to surface vegatation and the entire map might be covered in life spawned by rivers crafted by the dwarven hand.

Great drawing.

Complex waterways and aqueducts must be dug!

I meant lowering the river to 1-z below the level of what was excavated. But, seeing the drawing, I think that is much more awesome.
