White rocks hurt my eyes.
« on: February 11, 2012, 05:33:30 pm »

So after carving out several massive areas on different layers, I find myself with a problem.  I possess way too many rocks, and to make it worse they are all very shiny.  I need a project or something, ANYTHING, to use these rocks on.  Tossing them in the magma feels wasteful, and there is almost no room above ground for a castle/fort, as I live on the side of a bigass volcanic mountain thing.

A (very large) screenshot of just some of it:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's starting to actually hurt my eyes, and I need it gone!

Any suggestions?

Bins and blocks, the solution to everything. (Or build some huge epic white walls)

Press the (d)esignation button and then the (b) key, then (h)ide, and then designate them to be hidden.

Hiding it is just like throwing a towel over a dead body, it's still there and you know it.  Dumping is wasteful to me!

Ah, but a maze.  A maze that would blind anything and everything in it.  I think I may have to do this.

Step I

Designate a small area of about 2x4 as a garbage dump using the i (zones) menu.

Step II

Using the (d) designation menu, order all the stone be dumped.

Step III

Learn to respect useless migrants.

Step IV

Designate all the stone in the garbage dump to be reclaimed, and make all of it into stone crafts.

Step V

Trade for booze

Just set a stone dump outside your mason's workshop, and periodically unforbid the stuff in it.

Also, turn every stone into a block, so that you can organize them and build smooth stuff.

I've built castles into steep-as-hell cliffs before. It's pretty hard but it'll sap up your resources like a total bitch, which in your situation is pretty good. If it's 10*10*10 (that'd be pretty steep, though) it could use up to a thousand of your white rocks.

Also, ever heard of alternate colour sets?

I was thinking of making a floating castle too.  Alternate colors do not work for me.  I need stock gameplay!

Stock gameplay is for losers. I've made three tilesets just for myself because I hate the stock font. And I've also tinkered with colours a bit. But yeah, castles are nice.

Actually, make a grid of pillars and as you ascend the pillars interconnect them in an aperiodic way. It'd be like a dumb above-ground fort.

Ack. You've designated huge stone stockpiles?

Just leave the rocks alone and let them sit in the hallways and whatnot, they'll get picked up and used for construction or crafts eventually, moving all the rocks to a big stockpile just wastes your dorf's time and takes up lots of space.

Try using a quantum stockpile at least, you can make the bottom accessible and un-designate the dump stat when you want to use it later.

For getting rid of rocks, constructing above ground structures with walls/floor with stone consumes alot of stone. All the same color if you are aesthetically minded. That'd be a good use for all the white stone you are accumulating. Get a pile of unskilled/useless dorfs and set their labor to masonry and set'em loose building a tower or something. Just restrict your masonry workshops if you care about the quality of the goods it produces, though.

Holy FUCK.
Why not just Dump them and Reclaim them when You need them?

Anyway.

Use that big Storage Space to build a series of Stewers (Water heated by Magma + Victim = Delicious).

Also, why is the Farm and the Storage and all that so screwily shabbed together?!
Id suggest Burning everything and rebuilding more sensibly :D
