DF map viewer
« on: February 11, 2012, 01:12:58 pm »

Hi guys !
Do you know if there is a map viewer for DF, so you can see your map, zoom in, and see all the smallest places.

Thanks !

There is IsoWorld if you want to look at the world map, and Stonesense is an isometric viewer bundled with DFHack.  If you are looking more into 3D visualizer then check out Fortress Overseer

There's also the map export in legends. It exports two images, the tileset map used in game and a colored, shaded map showing you every curve and bump in a coastline.

There is nothing, so far as I know, that will let you browse an entire DF world in 1:1 scale.

that would take so long to generate.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

You can do that already by walking there in adventure mode.

In the time it would take to generate 1x1 squares of the whole map in a 3rd party map viewer? No. Probably less time.

Eh, if you dynamically load the map squares, shouldn't be too bad (guessing at the architecture of the world file here, but you should be able to render it in blocks; otherwise DF would need the entire world decoded and in memory at all times)

Yes.  This.

DF world is procedurally generated.  That 100mb save file only contains the parameters for that generation, and the history thus far, not every little detail.  As you visit with an adventurer, more of the world gets generated and saved, hence it growing quickly to several GB.

The only way to get a view of the whole world would be to somehow send an adventurer to every block of the game.
Get your peta-byte hard drive ready, if that's your goal.
