Toman squeezed the mage's shoulder gently, almost pricking her skin with the claws of his armor. "Hold on. You, what's your story?" he asked, turning his attention to the bard.

The mage ignored Toman and raised her arms, pointed at the bard and shouted, "Scorching Ray!" Her hand was surrounded by red glowing light. Just as the spell was being fired, the bard ducked and stuttered, "C-Counterspell!" White and red light interfered with each other and melted away.

"Well, I was just playing this song from score... The lyrics were strange but the song good, so I hummed! Then-"

"Fireball!"
"Ach! Counterspell! Then- erm, some illusion of a woman appeared and said something at her- I couldn't hear what she said..."

Another spell was being prepared.

Luke was starting to get irritated at this whole thing. His eyes narrowed a bit as it pained him to even want to continue this line of questioning. He might not be able to help Joshua at this rate. "Do at least some of them have formal training? For operating ships?"

@Fool

"Yes. Each and every one has had more than three years at sea. It is I that is inexperienced, but I'm pretty sure my abilities will more than cover. I read some books." The tone of his voice was slightly different from just before; more stronger and confident.

Toman did what seemed like the sensible thing at the time: he backhanded the woman across the face to stun her and knock her down, ducked the spells, and tackled the bard, dragging him back to his feet with one arm in a hammerlock behind his back. "Now, we're going to be sensible about this and listen to the whole explanation. Next one of you that starts casting, I draw my axe and this place gets bloody," Toman bluffed.

Luke looked up. "You know, if you pick one of them as a first mate, they can help you if you're unsure. They know what to do, you just need to lead them." He sat back in his chair hoping that this wasn't a stupid idea. "So, how would you like another shot at captaining a ship? I'll be buying one in the morning, and I can come back here to get you and your crew."

@SerCon

"Cough... Well... It's this score (he pointed at his feet, where a roll of paper lay). It's titled Winter Rose in some language... I just hummed it and this illusion thing appeared and said something only Sarah could hear... Then it attempted to touch her like a Phantasmal Killer spell. She apparently made her Fort save and then tried to kill me while running down the stairs..."

The mage Sarah was already coming to.

@Fool
"Ok. I'll be at the harbor gates at noon tomorrow with every crew member I'll need. Other than regular crew(shiphands, navigator, officer), do you need anyone else?"

"Yeah, did you find a navigator after you crashed your last ship? If not I'd be happy to see if I can find one." Luke stood up from the table. It was likely that he wouldn't be long. "Oh, right. I'll also need a cat to help with mice on the ship. Mine doesn't eat normally."

"Right. You stay there, and keep that score handy." Toman shoved the bard away and picked up Sarah, keeping her wrists in his hands to control her arms. "Now, you. Tell me exactly what happened." He didn't like having to be rough with women, but if he didn't keep in control of this situation people were likely to get hurt.

@SerCon

"... As soon as he started his song, a pretty-looking woman with long red hair and a wizard's robes appeared in front of me, like a Will-saved illusion - semi transparent. She started talking about 'how I am about to pay for my wrongs, you did not keep my promise' ... She then tried to touch me. It felt exactly like a Phantasmal Killer spell! And I know bards can make spells from music! So - Scorching Ray!" By the last three sentences, her voice slowly started to raise in volume, until she regained her interrupted rage and suddenly cast a spell. The bard was unable to Counterspell (due to Toman holding him in a lock) and received 16 damage.

((Which happens to be the maximum damage from 2 rays))

@Fool
"Cat, check. If you want to, you can find a navigator." Joshua sipped his drink. "Farewell, then! "

With his hands full, Toman had only one option. He stepped back for room, then leaned forward, throwing his head down and forward while pulling up on her arms in a brutal headbutt... made the worse for the fact he was still wearing his helmet. Since he had a strength bonus and a grapple advantage vs her undoubtedly crappy AC and low HPs, she was knocked out cold by the non-lethal attack. He sighed. "I said I didn't want any more violence, but do people listen?" He set her on the bar while Rae was like O.O from across the room.

"Er. Wheatly, do you think maybe you should see about healing that poor woman?" she asked. Toman did things like that sometimes due to his chaotic nature, but he always had good reasons... and from the look of things, she HAD been trying to kill that bard.

Toman turned back to the bard. "Give me the score. I need to read it myself, and I know a little of your craft." He held out his hand, indicating he wasn't taking 'no' for an answer.

(Also, Toman had her in a lock; he'd let the bard go. :P)

((Umm...Still Scorching Ray! :P I didn't know that >.>))

@SerCon

Wheatly went over to the collapsed wizard/sorcerer and cast heal minor wounds. The girl returned to consciousness.

The bard gladly handed over the accursed sheet of paper. Toman opened it and saw that it was written in some strange language, vaguely similar to common yet different.

Toman investigated the score further, attempting to read the melody of it without actually singing it.

Tali walked up behind Toman.

"Still the Guardsman you always were, eh Toman...busting up bar brawls and everything just like you used to in the service.

Maybe you left your calling a bit early?"

Toman turned, wary of letting Tali have his back. She was a useful ally, but he wasn't a stupid man; the guard who turned his back on a thief at the wrong time often found a knife in it, and he didn't extend the same trust to her that Rae did. "Perhaps. I found this. Do you make anything of it?" he asked, covering for himself.

Meanwhile, Rae had gotten up and was with Wheatly, attending to Sarah. "Are you OK? You're going to have a nasty bruise there," she said, touching the woman's forehead with butterfly-gentle fingers.
