The words melt and change. There are only three words on the slab now.

What are you?

Kald guessed he had passed the test. Was this another? What...not who.

What did he truly define himself as, he wondered...was the question being literal? He supposed answering 'friend' again would be the safest choice. But when had he ever done that?

He spoke again.

"A Father."

Anarose smiled slightly. Should she keep playing with him, or should she let him in?

Hmm.

The letters melted, and reformed again. However, they were still almost the same.

What are you?

Kald changed tacks. Perhaps his situation? His general mood?

He couldn't summon it up any better than one word. The word, he'd once had never let come into his consciousness. He had changed. When his Wife died. When his daughter ran...because he pushed her away. When he saw the mustering hordes of his peoples foes gathering for the end-times. When the first gate fell. And then the stars changed...

He spoke again.

"Desperate."

'Interesting word. . ."

The slab swung inward. At the same time, the words disappeared, and a red glowing portal appeared.

Kald walked forward in a relaxed stance, his axe held loosely over one shoulder. He wasn't so much worried about traps or monsters-though he was ready for them, ready as he would ever be-as he was glad to be out of the rain.

He stepped into the portal.

Strangely, he meets no monsters, and is taken directly to a cool cave. It seems natural, except for the fact that he is standing on tiles that seem to have been carved directly out of the rock. His dwarven senses told him that no mortal's hand could have wrought these. Light came from one direction.

Kald stamped his foot once, feeling and listening for the vibrations in the earth, then tapped his Great-Axe lightly against the wall and listened to the hollow ring. Seemed stable. He had been a miner after all, a long time ago. Some habits stuck with you.

He moved forward, into the light.

A adult dwarf emerged from the white portal at the edge of Anarose's Sanctum.

((Now, SerCon/Fool/any other RPers, take it away! xD))

The first impression you of Kald Blackstone is the way he carries himself, with a great deal of caution and mental deliberation. Furthermore, judging by his ornate armor, you can't help feel he carries an aura of command-you might guess he's the sort of Dwarf that others will follow, though no one follows him now.

While he doesn't seem tense, there is a certain feeling of resignation about him-like a man whose seeing a bad job through to whatever end, no matter the cost.

He's carrying a hefty runed Greataxe slung over his shoulder-a Dwarven weapon if there ever was one-and a heavy crossbow hangs over his shoulder. A mithral buckler in a hexagonal shape lies on his right wrist. All are impressably Dwarven design, scrupulously cared for and maintained.

For anyone who knows Tali, the similiarites are physical impossible to miss-the bridge of the nose, the dark black hair...most of all, it's the eyes-the same light coppery sheen, eager and forceful, almost molten in the right light. This man is certainly related to her, and too old to her sibling.

Moving through the shadows just past the gate a slender figure moved with the dwarf, staying about 30 feet back whenever she could. Her footsteps were silent from years of practice in the tombs and temples she'd visited in the past. Even if you saw her red hair in the shadows your eyes would want to roll to the side if you didn't get a good look the first time, a nice feature that her hat and cloak shared. Her breathing was steady and even as she stepped forward carefully clenching her haversack. To her knowledge the dwarf was still unaware of her. She wasn't sure why she was hiding from the dwarf, but then she realized that he might not open all the locked doors and gates for her if he knew. She had a look of grimace on her face despite not knowing why.

Her sleeveless robes were black with faint red detailing. Scars lined her arms, moving in all directions. The light caught her face revealing a large clean scar on her right cheek and a smaller scar on her chin. Most of her visible scars healed without too much damage, but the tell-tale colour and slight indents were still there. She dodged out of the light and back into the shadows. There was a white portal ahead of her.

She stepped through the portal a few moments after the dwarf, trying to keep a good distance in case there wasn't any shadows immediately past the portal. Sunlight bathed her bright red hair as her crimson eyes darted from side to side, looking for shadows. She started walking for the trees, trying not to gather too much attention by running. From there she moved from tree to tree, hiding behind each as she moved. She saw the gathering of people as she moved forward. She stopped at one of the closest trees to the group and started eavesdropping. She had her hand over one of the pockets of her haversack, just waiting for them to do something. She had to search this place for the book, and these people may very well already have it. She never could be too sure.

((I hope you don't mind if she stalked Kald. Her hat has a nondetection effect if that matters. It just means detect spells can't see her.))

Earlier...

Toman led the way below deck, his helmet on, visor down, and mouth set in an unreadable line. Drake followed, a mixture of worry and anger on his face - and a hint of embarrassment and frustration as his bow got hung on a door frame and he had to take it off and carry it in hand to get through. The brothers entered Toman's room and closed the door behind them. For a few minutes, an awkward silence reigned. Finally, Drake spoke.

"So... these allies of yours seem like nice people. I noticed you never mentioned any of them in your letters home. Your -rare- letters home." Drake leaned his bow against the wall as Toman merely shrugged."Right. I forgot. You don't care about anything. For all that armor and muscle, you're just a coward." Toman stepped toward Drake, grabbed his tunic in one hand, and lifted his younger brother up to eye-level.

"A coward? I see you forget, brother, whose shadow it was that you hid in, who it was that protected you, who protected all of his siblings and his mother, when Father was injured and bandits attacked Aldbarrow. You forget who alone held that house against all invaders and who, when the time came to rally, fought his way to the leader of the bandits and slew him. That was me. I always wanted nothing more than to protect my family." Toman dropped Drake and shoved him back a step.

"I see YOU forgot who it was that ran away from home without even so much as a goodbye because of some 'cursed armor' instead of trying to stick around and prove people wrong, that you weren't evil. Do you know how hard that made it for the rest of us? With his injuries, Dad couldn't work, and Mom was barely making enough for us to get by. All of us had to do what we could, however we could, to help out." Drake took a deep breath to calm down before he started yelling. "I remember once that you were a good man, and a follower of Saint Cuthbert. But when I set out to find you, all I heard were horror stories about this black knight who destroyed everything he crossed paths with. Are you going to deny that's you?"

"No. It's a fair charge. I have indeed visited retribution upon many souls in need of it."

"So it was you that killed the leaders of the Aun tribe, destroyed a fortress of dwarves, slaughtered an entire village...? People back home are even saying this business with the stars is all your fault, and from everything I've heard, I'm willing to believe them."

"Then you're an idiot, Drake, which is surprising given that you were always the smartest of the seven of us. Yes, I killed the leaders of the extremist Aun tribe. Yes, I massacred a fortress of racist dwarves, because they had something we needed, because they were a threat to themselves and others, and because they preferred to attack first rather than negotiate. And yes, I'm not particularly proud of it, but several years ago I burned down a village because most of it was disease-ridden and the plague had to be stopped there. But the constellations are not my fault. The people of this ship, myself included, are doing everything we can to prepare for what's coming from that constellation."

A sound from above interrupted them; it seemed as if another ship was nearby. "We'll finish this later." Toman hefted his axes as Drake picked up his bow, and the Fears brothers headed back to the deck...

Currently...

Toman didn't mind being spattered. He was damp himself from assisting with the sailors to get everything tied down. His armor would absorb the water eventually, anyway; he still had no clue about how it worked, but it seemed to take care of most of his needs for him. "I'm going to go get some rest. Wake me if there's any trouble." He went back to his room. Meanwhile, Rae had crept up behind Tali.

"I think the best thing for you right now is some tea and a hot bath, I don't want you to catch a cold," she said, wrapping her arms around Tali's shoulder and nuzzling her ear with a giggle. "Luckily for you I already had that prepared, hmm? Come along."

Anya was playing cards with Bael at the moment, shocking absolutely no one, and listening quietly to his stories. He seemed to be making them up on the spot about the sea and clouds.

In Anarose's Sanctum, Drake happened to spot Ikkeliou despite mechanically not being able to do so simply so that someone would be able to interact with her. It seemed she was following the dwarf, so he figured he should address him first and see if he could get some answers about her before he approached. There was an awkward silence as the dwarf apparently waited for him to introduce himself first. "So, uh, yeah. My name's Drake Fears. You, uh, you look really familiar. Do you have a daughter?" For some reason he felt compelled to hold a hand out as if to indicate how tall Tali was.

Bryce took a few moments to observe the new visitor to the sanctum. He hadn't seen this man before, but something seemed oddly similar about. He didn't quite recognize it, but as soon as Drake spoke, he remembered. The girl who he had seen earlier. Immidiatly, his mouth broke into a stream of words, never stopping at any point except to breath in.

"Daughter? The dwarf girl. Talked to her earlier. Nice, but scary. Same Species. Same family? Maybe. Big armor. And Weapons too. You're a warrior. Why are you here? Searching the girl?"

His words ceased as soon as they had started, leaving Bryce standing completly silently, waiting for an answer. His eyes continued examining this new intruder.

Kald nodded patiently.

"Well met Drake Fears-and present company. My name is Kald Blackstone Dökkarskjöldur.

And, Aye. I've been looking for my daughter-Tali Blackstone Skalagrimsdottir-for awhile now. Last I heard...she was with this crew. Doing...many things.

You know where she is? Where can I find her? Is Tali safe?"

Though Kald had strong Dwarven control of his emotions, he had the same fears inside any parent would have asking the question...

Bryce continued eyeing the dwarf as he spoke. So this was the father of the dwarven girl. Anyone could see it in the way he asked that question.

"Safe? Yes. Safe. On the ship. Is talking to some friends. Guarding the ship, too. Works with them. Am new here. Saw her first time before. But safe. Myes."

Bryce went back to silence. He waited for the joyful reaction that was sure to come.
