Ria smiled slightly in return.

"I can always thank my sister for that."

She began to recount the tale...

Flashback, about 50? years ago

Ria was distracted that day. She had indeed agreed to come out to lunch with Rae-Taesrhon was, without a doubt, the best chef in the village-and every Sunday, he laid out tables and chairs, serving his wares to any and all. But, she was still a neophyte Shaman, and busy writing observations of the Spirit realm in her notebook for her classes, while they were waiting for food.

"I'll be done in a moment, sister...the Spirits require many ink quills as sacrifice, apparently..." she said with a wry grin. Back then, Ria had been a great deal more cheerful-almost as much as Rae had been, not long before. Even her increasingly distracted state did not detract much from the joy she felt of home and family.

She was in fact, so distracted, she didn't notice the bedraggled Ranger in the arm-sling enter the tent, at first, with his Elf hound aside him. Rae saw him though. Bael seemed to rise from a defeated slump, upon noticing her. Ria, feeling something, turned about and met his eyes-pleasantly surprised, he was real, and not just another immaterial spirit wake. He took a seat across the room, and the pair began casting no so secret glances at each other from afar, each blushing furiously. It was quite humorous to the rest of their Elven Clanmates in the room, who knew the pairs reputation as being fairly 'serious' and 'Professional'.

Of course, all might have been disappointed, and they might not have approached the other in the end, if it weren't for Rae...

OOC: *throws the ball back to SC* :P
Note, in this case, I think Rae is almost 16-17ish years old, and Ria in her very early 20's-emotion wise.

(16 back then? She's barely 16 emotionally now. :P)

~Flashback~

Rae was getting bored. She'd wanted to see what Ria did, but sitting around all day writing in a book wasn't what she'd had in mind when Ria spoke of communing with spirits and all of it. She sighed and drummed on the table with her index fingers for a few minutes, trying to remember the rhythm of the raindrops against her tent during the light drizzle a few days ago, but gave up when she didn't come anywhere close to getting it right. She leaned back and put her hands behind her head, ruffling her feathers, as Ria announced she would be done soon. "That's OK. It'll be a bit before he finishes our meal anyway," Rae responded, turning her head to look at the entrance and watch people come in.

It looked like there would be only a small turnover of people today. A shame, really; while she didn't mind spending a bit of time with only her sister, this place was best when it was packed and slightly rowdy. Guess they're all preparing for another battle with the Orcs... she thought. The eighth person to enter after she started watching was someone she knew semi-well. Actually she just knew of him, and had seen him a few times here and there, but they'd never actually spoke. They just didn't move in the same circles; he did scouting and hunting, while she was a front-line skirmisher, using her battle rage to destroy the clan's foes. That meant, usually, she was with the other Kornes when being assigned. Nothing demoralized the enemy so much as several raging elves cutting bloody swathes through their ranks.

Wonder how he got hurt, she thought, noting his arm in a sling. He seemed tired, but brightened up a little upon seeing the pair of them. Rae glanced back at Ria, then watched Bael find a seat. After a minute, it became very apparent that he had actually brightened up upon seeing Ria, not her, as he didn't even seem to notice her! Kanesrae blinked at that realization, then at another as she noticed Ria was continually trying to check Bael out when he wasn't paying attention, her face slightly pink. Rae grinned and rested her cheek in her palm, eyebrows raised. "I see what's going on here. You~ like~ him~" she said teasingly, fully expecting a 'no I don't' kind of rebuttal. Before Ria could come up with one, she stood. "I'll be right back."

She sauntered over to Bael. "Hey. We haven't met yet, right? I'm Rae." She rested a hip on the table Bael was sitting at and leaned over to scratch his hound behind the ears. "You look like you could use a bit of healing... and someone to eat with." She tilted her head at his injured arm. "So you should come eat with me and my sister. She's pretty good with medicine, and she could use a few friends." She glanced back over, where Ria was trying to surreptitiously watch them with little success due to her poor Bluff score. On the other hand, Rae was pretty sure Ria was hearing everything she was saying. Her big sister ALWAYS seemed to hear (or see, for that matter) it whenever she said or did something she shouldn't.

"I've been paying attention, you know. I know you'd like to meet her. I think she'd like to meet you, too." Rae grinned. "How about it?"

Bael was a bit shocked, and his mouth opened once...twice...three times, then closed. He figured no excuse would get him off the hook, so he merely nodded.

"A most gracious invitation, Clan Sister...one I would be...happy to accept. Very much so." He said the last part a bit quieter, as if everyone in the room was not listening intently. Even the normally dour Taesrhon had stopped his cooking for a moment, idly cleaning out a wooden mug and trying to appear uninterested.

Bael walked over with Rae, bearing his arm injury with a bit of pride and swagger.

Amusingly, when Ria turned to meet them, she had the same expression Bael had a moment before.

"...Oh. I see my sister...I'm Ria. Of course.

Very nice to meet you-Sir..."

"Bael....and, this is Jhondryr. She is beautiful, yes? A beautiful animal. I am a Ranger. And, I am wounded. As you can see. " He spoke quickly, not pausing to breath.

Jhondryr laid her head in Raes lap, sighed and looked up her with keen, intelligent eyes-almost as if to say, Yeah, I know...

"...I am Ria, I'm studying...for class-and this is my sister, Rae! I love my sister very much. For all the trouble she gets me into..." Ria added, smiling shyly, and casting a glance over at Ria that conveyed her feigned annoyance, and an amazing degree of sisterly love.

As per custom, Ria extended a trembling hand, and Bael kissed it chastely. A flutter of strong emotion went through the both of them. They had a very good lunch that day.

Yet, it would still be a few weeks...

~Modern Day~

Riawilde beamed happily, treasuring the sweet memory as if it had been only yesterday.

"...it would be a few weeks before I gathered the courage to ask him out on a proper date. Well, we sort of asked each other out at the same time. I think Rae set that up too...

Normally, one would think the Elder sister would educate the younger, right?

In this case, it was quite the other way around. At least, Madame Anya, now you understand in a small way, why I put so much stock in family. How hard it was for me, to welcome you all into my clan. I think I made the right choice, though."

Rudra, meanwhile, looks through the Cloaks of Resistance.

"Say, Ria. Can you upgrade mine to a cloak of comfort? It's basically just adding an Endure Elements spell to it."

~Flashback~

Rae grinned and leaned back in her chair, hands behind her head, as Ria and Bael talked. Nice to see her having a good time. She's always so serious, her nose in the books... and he looked like he could use a friend, too. I think this will work out pretty well. She wasn't aware, then, of what exactly she had started...

~Present~

Anya looked a bit surprised. "Huh. I can't picture trying to set up my older sisters and cousins with anybody. On the other hand our family tends to have the parents do that, anyway..." She shrugged. "I guess it's different for you. It's just you, Bael, your parents, and your sister, right? So you treasure family more. Me, on the other hand... my family is huge. I have an older sister and an older brother, then four aunts and three uncles - one died of illness - my parents and grandparents, eleven cousins, a brother and sister in law, and then my sister has a son and my brother has two sons of his own so I'm an aunt myself to three nephews." She tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear and giggled.

"That's why I had to get out of there. Even for a castle it was getting pretty crowded. Anyway, that leads me to another question, if you don't mind answering it... Toman told me he and Rae met a few years back and you weren't traveling with her then. What made you change your mind?"

I started to make it into paragraphs, but it was too much effort to put 3 pages of IRC chat into descriptive paragraphs. I hope no one minds.

Ria pretended to check the cloaks again, while thinking of an answer.

"Thank should be easy, Brother Rudra. Hardly more than a days work...

To the question at hand, Anya...after my formal training was done, I went into the world by myself. A period of time apart from the clan, a test I had to undergo."

Ria scowled a bit.

"What precipitated my change of mind?

The last of my old mortal friends passed away. Peacefully, anyway. Though it was little comfort to me, as I attended their funerals, one by one...

I suppose it might be sort of frightening to face ones mortality....before I found all of you, I knew another group. They were adventurers, much like all of you.

There was the Paladin Dack, one of the Order of Mystic Fire...Leshe, she always called herself an 'honest businesswoman', like Tali does...Tyri the Bard. I loved her music...and, Aleena the dancing blade...

They were my friends. We had...fun. Excitement. Many adventures. For a time, I and Dack...well, it didn't work out. Something Bael was no doubt thankful for at the time. Eventually, time took them all-only Tyri died to violence, though. The rest grew old, retired happily, more or less...and aged, withered away before my eyes.

So, I wandered, and can barely recall those years. I became cold and distant to Humanity. Bael could not even find me. No one could. I do not know if I walked the real world of the spirit one more. But I was lost. Eventually, I found my way home.

Home was still, very far away, and once there, I took a lock of Raes hair from the mantle, and tracked her down through scrying pools. I'm trying to reclaim something I lost on the way.

Sometimes, I have hope for the future. Other times, I think It's all just going to happen again. I hope I have not burdened you too much with this, Sister Anya."

"That's right. I know you elves live several lifetimes, but I almost never think about it." Anya perused the cloaks. "I sometimes wonder if that's why elves as a whole have a stereotype of being distant. You must think of us humans as we think of pets. Good companions, but they're so very short lived and when they die you wonder if you can face losing another one no matter how much you loved the last one." She sounded slightly... amused. "Not that it matters to me. I think seventy, eighty years is just long enough. I have no idea how you elves stand it, personally. What do you DO with all that time? It must get very boring."

She turned back to Ria from the cloaks. "So, this thing you're looking for. Do you want any help looking for it?"

(You can also ask Anya stuff, otherwise I'll have to keep slipping bits into her reactions. ninja'd by professional ninja Rudra :P)

Things to do this week

Decide whether to...
  • Stop Bano and his leet undead army of death, or worse.
  • Track down the Aun clan and retrieve the ritual
  • Go find another person to steal a weapon from

Current place is either (1)in Anarose's library (2) in Port Nio (3) On the ship.

Please decide quickly- or else I can't plan a session...

Ria shook her head to Anyas questions.

"...I think I'll just have Vulsano make it for me. As soon as he's finished with my Totem, anyway..."

Back at the ship...

Tali sat cross legged on the floor of her bunk, in an almost Monk-like gesture. The Winterer lay in front of her. Cold blue, with wisps of frost coming from it's keen edge. She could feel the chill in her bones, in her soul.

She had not remembered much of the battle in where she had drawn it, not anything specific. Merely that she had so badly wanted to speak to Rae, to release the burden she had been carrying, to make her understand...and, the Blade had responded, in a way. It was...power. A wish.

She had felt it, deep down. A simple question. What did she want?

Tali wished the battle was over. She wished she didn't have to kill her Dwarven brethren.

Mostly though, she wished they were dead for trying to hurt Rae, that she was strong enough to protect her...the wish had been granted. Striking them down was easy. And every kill brought a certain...pleasure. A feeling of old hunger sated, a profound satisfaction.

For a moment, Tali's fantasy was real. She was not a mere thief, a poor rogue-she was a true Dwarven warrior. She was courageous, fearless....this sort of Tali would not run or fail the test, and she would not shame her friends and allies. Tali would fight, and win. Even Toman would be forced to admit how brave she was. For that moment, the secret fears Tali held deep within, her own insecurities, had been wiped away in a cold white blizzard.

It was Exhilarating. Amazing. Transcendent.

And, that's what had Tali worried...

She sat alone, favoring a wry grin, and wondering who would be brave enough to step through the door first.

The whisper of one of the many, ancient souls trapped in Winterer met Tali's ears...

"Be careful what you wish for, child..."

Alith sat on the ship's deck, thinking about several issues.

The first thing on his mind was Lucus' comments on those who murdered sentient beings for pleasure. 'They are not sentient...' It rang in his mind. He was on the brink of becoming a murderer like that. He had killed one man for fun. It was....horrifying to say the least.

The second thing was Rae's emotional state. To him, it seemed she was going through a similar thing that had occured to him when he decided to turn away from his assasin job. He himself had lost all motivation after remembering all the screams and pleadings of those he had killed. He had been struck with realizations that would have never occured to him in his amoral, inemotional cold state. He had, for months, drowned his sorrows in beer and seduction, assuming it would go away. It didn't, and that motivated him to atone for his mistakes.

The third thing was his past. He would never be able to return to his home city, especially to the Thief's Guild, after what he had done. He had killled the master thief with one arrow to atone for his crimes. Regardless to say, it didn't work and he was exiled. If he ever set foot there again, he would be killed on the spot.

Alith didn't want to think about these things, so he polished Warbringer and ate a taco, waiting for the next adventure.

Tali chuckled darkly. She spoke to the Winterer.

"Am I Drunk enough for me to think I'm imagining your voice, maybe? You sound like my Da. He was always saying things like that. I probably should have listened.

Raes worth it, you know. I'll pay the price for her. I'm standing up for something, for once in my life.

....Who are you, anyway? Can you answer?"

Tali didn't expect an answer, really. She was half convinced it was in her head. The voice had indeed, sounded suspiciously like her father.

Another, different voice spoke.

"We are the souls trapped by the metal of Winterer... It shall never let us go... All who die at the sword of Winterer are trapped by it... We don't think we can ever get out...

Some manage to find their way out though. We do not know how they did it. Winterer itself cannot speak... Its incomprehensible mind is locked away...
