Okay about 6% of the way through. That would be about 32 more dwarf years if
a) I did the math right
and b) You continue at the current rate

A more realistic estimate, if each cavern layer adds a year, would be 35 more years until you're done. Well, good luck.

Actually, it was a little faster overall.  I lost about 50-75% of my miners to injuries and deaths recently, but I'm moderately certain I've worked out how to stop that happening again.

A team of legendary miners does wonders. I've dug out 1/5th of a layer in 1 dorf year with 2 legendary miners and 4 expert miners, and they're getting faster by the second! Still, pretty slow. I reckon a team of around 20-30 legendary miners should make things progress... Quickly.

They do indeed.  Well, did anyway.  The legendaries are all either in the hospital or dead via mishap.  That shouldn't happen again though,  so once the current lot are up to legendary things should REALLY go fast.

Just to prove it while the dwarves continue digging (I want to hold off on pictures till they've dug out the main habitation level of the fort), here's the Hamebalanced hospital

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And here's the graveyard on the level above.  Before anyone asks, the reason the north side of that area isn't excavated is because it's an aquifer.

This is what I've gotten done so far.  This is Levels 7 and 8 down from the upper-most one.

What's slowing me down is having to channel up into those spaces between the bedrooms due to the aquifer being on the level above them.  To keep the dwarves from killing themselves (moreso than normal) I'm making them build ramps en-mass (after I should've realised I could've just make them dig ramps out and save a buttload of time  :-\ )and then channel up.  I'm also making the leave a perimeter walkway so the masons can smooth and engrave on those raised areas.

What's wrong with it?

With my 85 dwarfs on a 100-max limit, I'll try doing the same thing with my fortress thats a bit more compact in terms of length/width.

I'll mine the whole mountain in and around my fort, dig a few z-levels down in and around it, then collapse the entire mountain around my fort.. wonder how that'll work out >:)

Then after that I can proceed to collapse the entire area around my fort down to the cavern, then rinse and repeat until I goto the circus :D

Someone beat you to that.  It was brought up earlier in the thread.  They did the ENTIRE map on a single support.  And then they had a dwarf Pull the Lever.

Ah, there you are, project cube ladies and gentlemen, brought to you by Shurikane.

Aussie, I'm starting to think that you actually deserve your current title...

How many miners you got, and what are their estimated skills?

Also, are you actually gonna balance this all on a single support?

20ish and they're all ranging from dabbling to expert at the moment. As for the Support-o'-Death... Yeah, why not?  I'll put a one-room survival chamber somewhere so it doesn't end the fortress before we can watch it all collapse into the Magma Sea.  Also, the only reason I have my title is because the others voted it.  I wouldn't have put it there otherwise.
