Non-fantasy roguelike
« on: February 10, 2012, 05:09:32 am »

Hello there.
I'm looking for any non-fantasy roguelikes, i.e. for zombie-survivals, sci-fi, modern and et cetera.
For now I am aware of:
1.Cataclyzm
2.Rogue Survivor
3.Prospector
4.DoomRL

aaaand thats all.
Do you guys know any more games of such kind?
I'll be grateful as Urist McGratitude.

Survive in the wilderness (set in medieval Finland)

Chess rogue : mix of chess and roguelike

A few one, set in cyberpunk/futuristic background (search DoomRL website, he is hosting the wiki for one of them with mechas)

Liberal Crime Squad (close to a roguelike, but managing a group)

Xenocide is pretty much Nethack in a sci-fi setting.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

Caves of Qud is pretty neat, and it has a pretty good bay 12 thread too.

ZAPM is like Net hack, but sci-fi. There is also a bay12 thread that I believe the creator posted in if i recall correctly.

At this point, I'd say PRIME is the best bet for ZAPM doings as the dev is relatively active and they are doing wonderful, crazy things.

There's alphaman (post nuclear war humorous roguelike), aliensRL (made by the guy who did DoomRL), decker (hacking game that may qualify as a roguelike), InfraArcana (lovecraftian roguelike), gearhead1/2 (mecha roguelikes) and transcendence which is almost a spaceship roguelike.

almost a ____ roguelike.
A lot of these games would not seem to be roguelikes to a purist. Or anyone who actually played Rogue, TBH. That being said, you should try them anyway.

Eh, rogue can go bugger itself. Roguelike no longer means game-like-Rogue to most of the people playing them. Some folks still hammer on that, but most RL players more or less ignore them.

Anyway, suggestions: Steamband! It borderlines, but it's pretty nice; Steampunk/Victorian influenced *band variant.

Broken bottle (A T-Engine game) and Unstoppable (same website) are both non-fantasy.

You've also got Lambdarogue, which is technically sci-fi. There's a starcraft 7drl. There's Warp Rogue, a warhammer 40k inspired one, but the website for it seems to be down and I'm not finding it hosted somewhere else :(

Anyway, here's this. Pretty sparse; big ones that haven't been mentioned already are 3059 (And possibly 3079, which isn't free) and the JauntTrooper series (Which'll take an apple emulator to get running). The Slimy Lichmummy might fit, though it's a bit of a grab bag. There's several 7drls I've ran across that weren't fantasy inspired, but blazes if I can remember what any of their names are at th'mo.

Happy to help, myself and Frumple are good about these sorts of topics!

Blast you though Frumple for reminding me on Steamband, one of the *BANDS that most desperately would benefit from a resurgence of modern development considering the latest gains cooking for Angband 3.4/4 in general.   :'(

I've always been a fan of GearHead 1 & 2.  Bay12 has a thread about it.  It's a bit old, but the only thing to happen since then is the dev figuring out enough lua to release GearHead Arena.
