Tilesets and viewing multiple z-levels?
« on: February 09, 2012, 06:51:47 am »

I've heard a bit about the TrueType stuff coming in the new release, and it all sounds very exciting. :) I'm not very knowledgable about these things, so I was wondering, will this feature allow for tilesets to 'unobfuscate' the view of lower elevation z-levels when viewed from above?

Here's what I mean, see this screenshot?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

See how the lower elevations are all just dots, rather than tiles? That's what I'm hoping to be eliminated in future tilesets.

I saw an interesting mock-up screenshot of how it might look, but I can't find it now. Basically you could see creatures, items, trees, etc on lower elevations, only they were shaded a bit darker the further down they were. I'd absolutely love to see that happen! It would take so much of the annoyance factor out of hilly maps in Fortress mode. I'm sure Adventure mode could keep things concealed on a line-of-sight basis, but as a Fortress overseer, I think it would be nice to be able to see everything happening around the map without shift-","-and-"."ing all the time. x)

I once shot a bear in the eye with a bow on the first shot, cut it up, found another one, and shot it in the eye too. The collective pile of meat weighed more than my house.

Nope, truetype has absolutely nothing to do with that problem.
BTW, I've discussed it briefly here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=41266.msg738526#msg738526 , there's also a mockup, though it's probably not the one you've seen.

This is the main Suggestions thread for that feature.  It's also in Eternal Suggestion Voting as "Depth by darkening / misting / blurring".
