To my esteemed collegue, Friedrich von Hohenzollern, Research Director of W.A.T.:

The space station CHASE is planning is intended to be a grand symbol which all of humanity may look upon with wonder. A neutral structure, which will serve as a staging point for leaving our cradle. A safe place, which will benefit all of us.
With this in mind, I regretfully inform you that we must decline your offer to significantly contribute to the founding of the station. The current tensions between Austria and your backing nation are well-known, and would result in a conflict of interests in keeping the station neutral. Furthermore we have already agreed to work with DWARF. The embargo between Scotland and West Germany would create an unsettling amount of strife in the creation and upkeep of the station.

With hopes that we will all find peace,
Commisar Xin Su of the Chinese Assembly for Space Exploration.

Turn 16: 1961-1962
Note: In an attempt to speed up turns, I will now only recalculate designs on demand, rather then always.
Also on Taikonaut training, you can increase the training speed. ( Speed training run) but that might result in casualties.

Xin Su: "Work faster! We only have a few years left of preparations. The station's not ready yet, and we still lack an effective launch vehicle."
Liang Chou: "Couldn't we just rent a Scottish shuttle, sir?"
Xin Su: "Hahaha, worry not, my young friend. CHASE scientists are among the best in the world. They will come up with a solution."

To: Urist McLowe, director of DWARF

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am director Xin Su's assistant and heir apparent to CHASE directorship. I loathe to go behind his back like this, but I fear Xin Su is too prideful to ask for further help himself. Our rocket technology is behind yours, and his plans for CHASE's next launch vehicle are an obvious stop-gap measure. It would needlessly risk our taikonauts. I, furthermore, strongly believe we should launch a practice mission next year. We could do it, but the safety engineer predicted only a 25% survival chance for our valued crew.

I wish to discuss the terms for renting a DWARF shuttle should we perform a test mission next year, and I sincerely hope that DWARF is interested in a mission to practice constructing a space station together with CHASE before the real mission.

Liang Chou, future director of CHASE.

Research:
Lab 1st floor: Improve the success chance of space suits.
Lab 2nd floor (Yi shing): Space Stations: Theoretical. ($2000)
Lab 3rd floor (Shaiming Hu): Medium chemical life support unit (10 people [9 if that's the limit for 2m station modules], energy-based)
Lab 4th floor: Safe cockpit module (3 pilots, an escape rocket with just enough fuel to get away from an explody thing and head for Earth [if near Earth], a return heatshield, a way to easily use suit oxygen tanks for emergencies, able to hit the Earth without killing everyone inside, and some way for the crew to survive if they hit water. I'd sorta like an increased chance of success if everything's fine and I just decide to use it as the re-entry vehicle. It will need a docking system at some point, if that needs to be designed in. 4m's fine, or 5m if the 4m design would have a maximum survival rate below 75%.)

Design & Production
None.

Construction
None.

Missions:
None.

Taikonaut Recruitment:
Spend $4000 recruiting people of at least .75 skill.
Expedite the training of taikonauts three, four, and eight. They'll die of old age before becoming useful at their current rate.

Other:
Aerospace department investment (year 2 of 5) ($1000)
Trade my Reusable Single Stage Hull blueprints for ASTRO's Normal Fuel.

Total expenses: $10,000

Most excellent- it can launch itself!   Now I can give people rides!

If I wanted to increase the safety of reentry for my shuttle, what would I need to do?  Refine the design, launch it a few times, research something on the shuttle hull, or something else?  Some combination of the above?

Neat.

What would be the thrust requirements for a shuttle to launch, maneuver to an orbit point in LEO, and safely return?

Same as the thrust requirement for getting into orbit, except for the entire shuttle and not only the payload. (ie weight* 110 %)

The theoretical research system isn't really optimally balanced so I think it would be better if you just directly research what you want to with them.
ie Vasimir engines and Heathshields.

Mass drivers are a late game tech, while Vasimirs can only work in space, at the benefit of using very few fuel but instead using much power.

Anything can be sold to civilians, if you do commercialising research.

Actually, they aren't. Simply because it would mean that you could get extra labs very easiliy. (Ie building lots of specialised labs very cheaply). I could let you build a specialised lab, but it's going to cost you 10.000. for the first one.
