Switching pumps on and off

Is there a way to connect a lever to some part of a pump system so that I could turn the pump system on, or off, at will?

You can also place a floor hatch over the inlet side of the pump, or a floodgate on the outlet side.  That won't turn the pump itself on or off, but will stop the flow of water.
