I was playing dwarf fortress, and my flat mate came in when goblins were raiding heavily, and he drew this picture based on his observations of what I said:

The first time I showed dwarf fortress to a friend he was amazed and confused. I spent an hour explaining how to make a proper farm and to dig hols and harvest trees which made me realize (again) how absurdly complex the game is. After that, he played it constantly for days. Not sure if he still does.

Well, so after talking about how amazingly in-depth, yet fun this game was, I finally convinced my friend to sit and watch as I started a fort. He plays plenty of games, I've just never managed to get him into DF before.
So there I am, talking him through the many menus as I order my starting seven about to start digging out the beginnings of a fort, chopping trees and making workshops, letting him have input into the basic design... A few minutes later, as I've dug out a couple rooms for workshops and am about to designate some bedrooms, he says "Nah, leave that bit like it is," I realise he's snickering, and take a closer look at the fort he's helped me design...

The main hallway and adjoining rooms make the shape of a phallus. I facepalmed pretty hard, it was funny. Still, it's a start!

Too bad I don't have that many IRL friends who don't play DF, who are still close enough that I might try hooking them to DF I can't get all those responses.

For the record, I have 4 IRL friends who DO play/know enough of DF.

This is probably an opportune moment to pass on a complaint from a friend of mine.  He's trying to look up designs for fortresses for dwarves.  Warhammer dwarves.  "Dwarf Fort" gives Dwarf Fortress, as of course does "Dwarf Fortress".  And, because of a certain mod, so does "Warhammer Dwarf Fort[ress]", and variants thereof.  All the usual Google-Fu tricks (+ing and -ing terms, quoting, etc) have failed spectacularly.  Or succeeded beyond ones wildest dreams, albeit the wildest dreams of someone wanting to actually know more about Dwarf Fortress.  Which isn't him, at the moment.  (I believe he is bemused, somewhat, at my badly told tales of this world of Dwarves/Dwarfs and Fortresses.)

So stoppit!  Never say "Dwarf" and "Fort" or "Fortress" in any forum post ever again, you lot.  Especially not in the Warhammer mod thread...

Yeah, most of the first responses I've gotten were along the lines of 'y u hack coputer?' and 'what the hell is that', followed by an extreme lack of interest when I open my mouth to explain it. Still not as funny as the looks I've gotten when people notice me playing Aurora, though.


Teach your friend how to play, and remember to call him 'Grasshopper' constantly, especially when he is trying to build effective traps and animal genocide machines.
