Lay more eggs...I guess.  Is 5 possible without draining resources too much?  What's the max amount?

with your size you may lay as many eggs as you wish.
though to avoid draining resources (since 1 filament is required to lay eggs) you must simply avoid lowering the filaments to less than 49.
so...just say a number.

12.  Divide it into two groups of six.  5 in each group shall become praetorians.  The remaining 1 in both groups shall become new overseers.

wait wait.
laying eggs cost 1 filament.
Fertilizing them costs the remaining.
to say:
i lay twelve eggs.
Then i decide i want them to become "fools" so they simply hatch.
if i want one to become a scout, i must pay the remaining 1 food cost.

If you want i'll procede with laying eggs, though notice that they won't hatch with time. (except maybe as fools)

well no.
at the present we are following the ant-like procreation method:
eggs have inside them all the same thing (a Fool or a low level worker) which costs 1 filament.
Unless "royal jelly" or whatever it is the hivemind "produces" isn't given to them, they will remain low level.
They will hatch as fools, (the 1 filament thing).

Do we have "royal jelly"?

ACID-GUARD/PRAETORIAN= costs 13 food and 6 filaments, 6 cm of acid-spitting, acid exploding goody
OVERSEER= 6 energy 4 food 6 filaments. You need someone to control many? call this guy 0.001 mental.

Energy Storage:24 (earn 6X from hivegrass+2 hivespawn)
Food Storage:24 (earn 80 a day)+(random from hivespawn)+(random from hunter group)
Filaments specialized: 203
Filaments available: 186
Minimum Filaments to keep: 48
Unfertilized eggs: 0

you could build 1 praetorian and 2 overseers paying 12 energy, 21 food and 10 (-2 from normal because there is the eggs cost) filaments. You'd stay with only 3 food though. And you met days end through a lucky roll.

Just gather more food.  We'll need to stockpile, before getting enough filaments to actually make the advanced castes.

The Grand Hive Army will be created!

Also do not approach the probably black, somewhat sticky & stinking floor on which corpses were found. danger ahead.

I vote to sleep until morning, working the night, in the cold, will cost us many lives and resources.

In the morning, make more fool to collect lotsa food. we'll need more expeditions.

During the night you decide not to rest.
No syndicates to bother you, but still you give out an order to keep away from the floor of Doom.
or FOD, as your surviving overseer, the one in charge of the ten fools, has called it.
You decide to increase the lenght of your roots, and then...they intertwine with other, strange, hard things...roots. But bigger. Thicker. Some are smaller and thin, but others...those others are enormous.
You leech from them. You realize this thing is doing exactly what you are doing. But without help, and maybe...maybe you can learn from it.
It's a towering thing. Thick canopy of leaves and branches...you feel so small...so so small.
-60 filaments +600 food
But it trembles. Syphoning from it will certainly bring it's death. If not now, later. How much however, is something you cannot determine. But for the moment, it can be kept syphoned.
Your hivespawn release their spores, and you can feel them being carried away by the wind...you have no idea were they will end up though. You should start thinking of a better way to control the spores. Who knows what batch of evil doers will be released else?

In the morning, make more fool to collect lotsa food. we'll need more expeditions.

You lay eggs, 40 of them. Which promptly hatch into 40 fools.
-40 filaments
The mass of small cute crawlers start scattering around, every now and then coming back with a leaf, a piece of unknown meat or insect, or a rock.
You feel their vibrations all around you.
That's when the scout, the surviving one, comes back into radio range for report.
Something is touching him with a stick. Something big. He is trying to get away but it's following him.
On the other side, the first Overseer reports that it has reached full mawing capacity till the off-limit FOD.
And big vibrations have now stopped moving.

X mark the big vibrations

You pick off a wave.
Oh mom i can't believe it!...look, the grass is RED! Sending you a tweet.
Darling why the duckface?!
BANGBANG!
L-O-L
Ehi i thought there was something moving in the grass!
Oh my god my god aliens!? look at those tiny things...

Overseer one requests permission to terminate operation of mawing.
Overseer one has been picked up.
Overseer one is flyiiinggggg i am freeeeeeeeeeeee

*comunication with overseer one terminated*
*fools under overseer one are scattering around, coming under your control*
*overseer one comunication re-established*
It's spinning around here....

War recap:
Glanders are the spitters of your army. they spit a mixture of hardening armor and acid.
The gatherers are fools, simply put, of the old generation. They do not have the armor inside them.
Fools are the new generations. they have the rock armor you possess always active, and the pincers. and resemble all in all ants, but 1 Cm*3 ants.
your vanguards are gory messes of explosions and acid. they stand at 6 cm*3 except one, which is bigger at 10cm*3
scouts are fools which have longer legs for better running speed.
Hivespawn or "Hiveflowers" are static, and do not attack of their own. Though if somebody were to grab one they might get some scratches.

So just from skimming, I think that it's sapping energy from a tree? If one tree is unable to handle our leeching, we must leech from a network of trees. Like the fungus from Nausicaa.

Could be a more reliable source of energy and food/ +1
