The Defense of Elise - Prologue: Bootcamp
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:23:54 pm »

Hello everybody,
I'm thatkid. I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal. You may have heard of me. I'm very important, I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany. If you've entered this thread, though, you're no doubt more interested in this game than me and so I'll cut to the point.

For the past month or so I have been working on-and-off on a campaign setting, and a set of rules to go with it. I find that it is now time to test these rules, though they are a tad incomplete, and to flesh out the world a bit more through actual play. To that end is this game. You need not worry about learning the rules because, as I have said, it is sort of incomplete and so I will be handling all mechanics in the background. You should be more interested in the RP, then, but feel free to ask mechanical questions all the same!
I encourage OOC conversation and speculating regarding the game, but I must ask that you keep OOC knowledge out of IC- by this I mean that it's fine to ask other players for ideas, but if your character wouldn't take an idea then you should probably not do that...or something.

In any case, this game will take place on one of the two-to-three continents present in the game world. Specifically, the Continent of Elise. More specifically, it will take place on the northern border of the last remaining Human Kingdom in Elise: Arkros. You will be playing a group of soldiers who may be of any race that is found on the continent of Elise, of any variety of origin be it criminal, noble, or a simple farmer-turned-conscript.

This is a Fantasy World in decline, a place where magic once ran rampant but, due to no small effort on the part of the Church of Light, the superstitions of the common rabble, and the progress of technology, has all but faded away. Brave knights cross lance and blade, while regiments of soldiers line up to fill each other with projectiles born by blackpowder and clockwork. Mages carefully work their art in what few bastions remain to them, or travel the world in the guise of simple scholars. Shamans and Witch Doctors commune with spirits, guiding their primitive tribes. Engineers construct massive war machines, and build metal men which might gain sentience due to some errant battlefield magic. It is Gaslamp Fantasy, perhaps more Steampunk, and if you've ever seen the show Wild Wild West that's a pretty good basis for what your average adventurer might experience during their...adventures.

The History So Far (As of the creation of this thread):
It was in the dead of night, they say, during their annual ten year moot that the The Circle was felled by the very perversions which they so often sought to combat. Led by a Masked Man, an army of Corpse and Clockwork overran their glade. The world tree was fouled, the forest so many called home burnt and charred. And the nations of Elise thought nothing of it.
In the coming days, disturbing reports came out of the Mountainhomes, the great ancestral homelands of the Dwarven people. Something was in the tunnels, many of the Homes had lost contact with one another. Their Queen, Therryndil Stonefist, and her clan simply went missing during a routine inspection of the mine shafts. And the nations of Elise thought nothing of it. That was, not until survivors began to trickle down from the mountains. It was the Masked Man, they said, an army of Undead who had turned their own great inventions against them. Those who did not fall in the initial attacks, and who had not fled, had forsaken their family and become The Unwanted, clanless, now working in endless, but living, toil for their new undead masters.
And then the Kingdom of Greth, which had been resting in its sudden and unexpected respite from Orc Raiders out of the nearby Badlands, fell in a single, horrific assault on the part of The Undead. The nations of Elise took notice. The Kingdom of Arkros and the Elven Clans of the Felian Forest joined as one to hold back the onslaught, but it soon became apparent that they alone could not stem the tide. Setting prejudice aside, they accepted the offered hand of the Goblin Tribes of the Eriodos Desert and called for aid from the Freewater Holds of the south.
The triumvirate formed, for aid from the Freewater Holds was marginal at best and the Church Orders were too busy with their own unending bureaucracy to render assistance, the Humans of Arkros, the Elves of the Felian Forest, and Goblins of the Eriodos formed a line. And they prayed that it would hold.

Will this be play by post or session?
What sort of mechanics are you using?
Are the players going to start in one party or separate locations and possibly never meet?

1. Play by post.
2. Majority of contentious actions will be dealt with using 1d10s. In fact, the only time 1d10 isn't used is when percentage (such as a called shot's effect, or the backfire chance of a failed casting check) dice are necessary, or when figuring out damage (which depends on the damage itself). Combat is fast, people are more likely to fall unconscious before they die. Armor negates damage, and shields and skill with weaponry prevents it outright through a parry/block score. Where the roll wouldn't normally be hidden behind a DM screen, I'll share it.
Combat actions themselves are rather common sense. If it doesn't sound like you'd be able to pull it off in one turn, you probably can't. The rules allow for a Greater Action and a Lesser Action, or a Full Round Action, but for the purpose of stream-lining things I'll just take commands from characters and apply them that turn as best as I am able within those rules (and letting you know OOC if it's impossible, if I can't).
3. They'll be starting as one party. This may change later on for reasons relating to plot, if the players so choose.

Hhhm, I think I'll go with a strong character instead of a dexterous or mage one for once.

Name: Fibleck Thorin
Race: Dwarf
Physical Description: Average height for a dwarf with a red beard bound into a single braid and unusually large eyes for a dwarf, he wears a battered steel helm and carries a large war-axe.  In addition to his helm he is fully outfitted in  steel mail armor, which, like his helm, is battered and in need of repair.  Over his helm he wears a red cloak with a family crest on the back.
Personality: He is slightly insane (see bio for why) and tends to try to find the most direct route out of any situation and has no patience for any type of double-talk or debate, but can actually come up with a good plan occasionally.
Biography: Fibleck was a caravan guard before the Masked Man arrived, and consequently he was escorting a caravan back to the mountain-homes when the Undead came.  When he came up over the hill to see the great mountain-homes and was instead greeted by abominations he fled.  He attempted to hide in the woods, but soon he became lost.  The guilt of having abandoned his escort combined with days wandering in the forest with no food or drink save a few meager berries and water from leaves mentally unhinged him.  Eventually he wandered close enough to a human town to be found by a patrolling guard.  Now he is focused with single-minded intensity on redeeming himself, and socks.  Yes, redemption and socks.
Path: Combat, throws himself into battle almost recklessly when the Undead are involved.

Any problems here?

Name: D'zelik Axriluz
Race: Goblin.
Physical Description: Lime green skin. Thin, seemingly emaciated, in fact. His long black hair is kept in a ponytail tied with sinew most of the time. He is clad in the in the hides of beasts from some of his most challenging hunts, along with piercings, necklaces, bracelets, and several other accessories made from their teeth, claws, and bones.
Personality: Strategic, calculating, usually calm. He seldom enters a situation without having a plan first, and never engages in a fight that he doesn't feel certain he will win. Although he despises the very thought of defeat, he will not hesitate to retreat if things get too far out of his control. He is known to hold intense grudges against anyone who manages to beat at anything, no matter how trivial.
Biography: The single greatest hunter in his tribe, he began unusually early in his life. Due to lacking in brute physical strength, he learned to make up for it by paying close attention to his opponents, his environment, and anything he could use to shift the odds in his favor. One of his favorite achievements was taking down a crocodile more than three times his size after stalking it for days during his teenage years. His reason for deciding to join the fight against the undead is simple: He feels his skills are being wasted going after the same, predictable creatures all the time. Most of which hardly seem to put up a fight anymore. What he wants, is to hone his skills even further, to feel challenged again. This war seems like the perfect opportunity.
Path: Knowledge.

Name: Wesley King
Race: Human
Physical Description: Weak but resilient do to never working an honest day in his life, but he travels (and runs away) quite a bit.  Light brown hair, Slender eyebrows, Pretty for a man, could pass (and has passed) as a woman if he cleans up right.
Personality: Sarcastic, Sardonic, Pessimistic, Cynical, and rude...  when not putting on an act.
Biography: Some would call Wesley King a cheat, a conman, a swindler.  None of those are true, Wesley is a man of science, or he was until he was arrested for fraud and given the choice to either spend 3 years in the army or 3 years behind bars, he chose the one he believed would be less dangerous for his health, needless to say Wesley wishes he knew there was a war going on.  Wesley grew up on the streets of Ivanos spending much of his time around apothecary, alchemists, and the such.  During his years he's held many jobs, most of them covers for other jobs, which of themselves were only taken so he could obtain other more paying jobs.  Bootlegging, Counterfeiting, working his way into the will of a rich elderly woman at least twice, impersonating a guard. But that all ended when he found his "legit" calling, peddling miracle cures across the continent.  King's Curing Cream could be found on the shelves of any intelligent, deal savvy buyer.  It cured itches, scratches, inflammation, infections, broken bones, broken hearts, diarrhea of the mouth, constipation of the soul, Sailor's limp, Charlie Horses, Goblinism, male pattern baldness, etc.  All 100% Guaranteed*
Path: Guile

I decided to mix my normal alchemist character, but with a wild west flair of being a "snake oil" salesman.

Name: Sarek Tel'Hal
Race: Human
Physical Description: Tall and lean, Sarek is often well-kept and tries to make sure he always looks his best. White-gold Hair.

Personality: Determined but Arrogant and Proud though friendly enough and tries not to look down on others intentionally, pride is easily damaged and he can lose his friendly demeanor when he believes somebody has upstaged him.

Biography:
Sarek grew up the heir of a well respected and wealthy noble family in The Kingdom of Arkros. His father was a great soldier and hero so as a young boy Sarek idolized him and reveled in the attention that having such a great father attributed to him. He had a good relationship with most of his family and was well liked by the other noble children who he had to spend time with.

This all changed when Sarek's father was killed by brigands, causing Sarek to accelerate to the head of his household and forcing him to take on new pressures and responsibilities. Due to the status and reputation of his father Sarek was heaped with expectation and it began to take it's toll on the young man who struggled greatly to live up to the image of the former head of the family. Soon Sarek's close ties to his family were starting to strain particularly his relationship with his younger brother who many considered a better replacement for his father because of his superior intellect and martial abilities.

And so one night when the pressure was getting to be all to much Sarek left a brief note permitting his younger brother to take over the family and its assets and fled with some coin. Deciding what he could possibly do with himself he decided he would attempt to follow in his father's foot-steps and signed up for the military. Being a pretty-boy noble who no longer held on to any assets saw Sarek made into a target of ridicule by many of the general soldiers however the relativity impressive martial skills he had been able to hone during the vast amounts of free time afforded to a noble were enough to win him some begrudging respect.

Name: Leiara Talderin
Race: Elf
Physical Description: Leiara stands at a modest height of 5'9", her body is styled as of a warrior of her race -lithe, graceful and overall fit for an honest day's work. Her long black hair is matched in hue only by her eyes, seemingly soft but steady in their gaze. Her skin tone is that of a morning day's light and a dark green tattoo shaped as that of a tear can be seen on her right arm.

Personality: Optimistic, Unassertive, Kind of heart, Curious, Dry in humor, Loyal and Calm-headed
Biography: Leiara was neither the best, nor the smartest of her clan, but she had the prowess and passion to be of notice to those who led them. A humble huntress before any news of the comings and goings of the world reached the clan's ears; she was one of those who firstly volunteered to be of service to the call for aid. Knowledge of Survival and primal instinct was her forte, and she was not one to forget it in this world. For history may repeat itself, and she knows that death is ever present in a world brimming with life.
Path: Stealth

Well, stick this guy in the waiting list, I guess.

Name: Jared Luxmiles
Race: Human
Physical Description: Tanned skin, body muscled but not overly so. Wears leather robe-armour emblazoned with the insignia of the Order of Dheurvas, with brass buttons and a multitude of handy pockets.

Personality: Has a great distaste for users of magic, and if forced to cooperate with one, will keep one beady eye on them at all times- and sometimes that eye is sighting along his rifle, and my, but do his fingers feel buttery today. Is very religious. Approaches problems in a straightforward manner: if it moves, shoot it. If it doesn't move, watch it till it does.
Simple-minded, though not stupid. Has a powerful speaking voice, especially regarding matters pertaining to the Church.

Biography: Born to a poacher in far-off Taros, Jared took up his father's trade, hunting game on church territory. Till one day, he was caught, and thrown into a cell. Priests of the Light explained his sins to him, explained the nature of the world- as through the tainted glasses of the Holy Light-, and begged him repent. After a dream in which he saw Dheurvas himself speaking to him, Jared did so, and joined the church as a novice. With study and hard work, he became respected, especially for the way in which he could speak of the Light.
Church elders decided to send him as a missionary to Elise. As a missionary of the Order of Dheurvas, he travelled the lands, spreading the word of light, and dealing swift (vigilante) justice against heathens with his trusty rifle- his old poaching skills finding new use in aiding him across the more savage parts of Elise. Upon hearing of the unholy fusion of magic and machine, by some necromancing follower of Morten, his blood boiled, and he raced to join the forces of the triumvirate.

Path: Devotion

No one else took devotion? Really?

Ridiculous edit: just putting this here for future reference.

Character Sheets have been created, will update the list in a moment.

Of Note
Fibleck, D'zelik, and Wesley have the Quicker Evasive Action talent and so may utilize a lesser action to better improve their chance of not being hit by a projectile. For everyone else, this is a full round action.
Fibleck and Sarek can both make a check to avoid falling unconscious, when their injuries would normally render them such.
D'zelik and Leiara are both capable trackers.
D'zelik can reload a ranged weapon faster than anyone else. Leiara is able to dual-wield and attack with both weapons at the same time (with a penalty).
Fibleck adds his shield modifier to his Dodge chance, meaning that he is able to block projectiles.
Thanks to his noble upbringing, Sarek is the only one with enough riding experience to control a mount during combat. The others will have an incredibly hard time doing so.
Leiara gets bonus damage on attacks made against unaware targets.
Wesley is incredibly good at breaking and entering, owing to a youth spent in the gutters. (The "Rogue" tree of the Stealth Path talents could probably use some more interesting things. Expect changes in the future, Wesley!)
Wesley, D'zelik, and Leiara are quite sneaky.
Fibleck is the guy you want to go to if you need some first aid, but if he's not available Sarek might be able to help.
If you get captured and tied up/locked in jail, Wesley will probably be the first to escape.
Sven is the guy to go to if you're in need of some field repairs on your equipment. Incidentally, he's also rather knowledgeable as far as Arcana, as well.
Sven would be able to provide aid in the form of a few cantrips, but he was forced to leave his spell book behind while fleeing his master's wrath.

On the Equipment Side of Things...
If it was in your character sheet, you probably got it.
Fibleck has the best gear for tanking, with Sarek coming in at a close second.
D'zelik, Leiara, and Wesley are all outfitted in hide or leather.
Sven, the poor guy, will probably need to ask for some armor. Unless he'd rather remain in cloth, it certainly does have the benefit of safer spell casting.
Regarding standard issue military equipment, D'zelik, with his Saguaro Bow and Spear, will probably be the least likely to be in need of any and Wesley and Sven the most.
Fibleck, Leiara, Wesley, Sven, and Sarek can expect standard issue Arkros Rifles during the prologue. Wesley and Sven will also get their pick of a nifty standard Arkrosian Steel Melee weapon.
Leiara has got a pair of swanky Elven Steel Short Swords, Fibleck brought along his Steel War Axe, and Sarek is naturally carrying his trusty longsword.
As has been stated previously, Sven is a wizard without a spell book. Maybe he'll pick one up soon? The enemy sure does make use of a lot of magic, and there are bound to be a few laying around...

(I don't know if it will fit in the setting's magic system, but I want to try a character who combines minor enchantments and clockwork while passing it off as clever gadgetry rather than actual magic. An example of the sort of thing I am going for would be a retracting grappling hook, which is impractical with physical means but might be managed with a few enhancements to certain mechanisms.)
((I guess I will go on the wait list then.))

Name: Sven Clackstin
Race: Gnome
Physical Description: Short by human standards but slightly above average height by gnome standards. Average build and dark brown hair.
Personality: Somewhat quiet, tends to be slightly nervous much of the time but can be somewhat reckless when he is caught up in an idea. Often curious about things.
Biography: Growing up as an apprentice to a human tinker in a town in southern Arkros, Sven's ambitions often exceeded his (decent, but not the best of students) skill at crafting. This started to change when he met a 'scholar' traveling from Tvanos, who agreed to teach Sven some of the basics of magic. Sven began to secretly experiment with enhancing his normal work with small amounts of magic, but his master nearly discovered this after a rather difficult to explain backfire. Desperate to find find an excuse to escape the increasing suspicions of his master (a fairly devout follower of Dheurvas), Sven joined the army's new push for recruitment before he really thought it through.

EveryZig: You're not going on the waitlist because I reserved spot 6 for you.
That looks fine, just be forewarned that putting lasting enchantments on mechanical items is an incredibly difficult tasks- the more parts there are, the harder it is to enchant. There's a reason that the setting's Sauron using it is such a big thing, is what I'm saying. That being said, you can certainly try to enchant gadgets and whatnot, just be prepared for an uphill battle.

Phantom: I was going to start at 9 tonight at the latest. Since we just got the last character in, I'm going to make the character sheet, update that "info" post with Sven's information, and then get around to writing the first post of the actual game.
