Look for military strategy books.  Tactics, maneuvers, etc.  Also, get a dagger.

I want this guy to become a European Sun Tzu.

I don;t think we're in Europe - more of a European-derived fantasy universe.

But I'll second the military strategy books - and recommend books on logistics, government, etc.

to put it simply, READ EVERYTHING THAT LOOKS REMOTELY USEFUL. Also, have we read those books we've already got does keeping them provide us with some kind of bonus or something?

Agreed on the books. But I think, as a scholars, we should take a more supportive role. Add some healing and defensive magic to the list. Or we might want to take the apothecary role. Lets see if we can make some nerve affecting poisons, or at least get some of the herbs for such.

Obek is capable of magic...are all intelligent humans capable of doing it?

I was kinda hoping for a more sciency, logic type guy, with the military genius of Clausewitz.  But having magic capabilities will DEFINITELY help.

All humans can do some magic if taught, but true mastery takes a very long time. Right now the only competant person is Paul(possibly the old man too). The only reason you can actually do magic is because of the occasional magic lesson from guest speakers from the wizards tower. The rest of the party(except for the soldiers) have similar educations to yours.

Also, on sources of info, they basically fill out the notes(just whatever Obek can see otherwise) and allow you to do things. You chose an educated person, so you pretty much get a break with this, but if you try to do something you know nothing about, then there is a large chance that you will screw up horribly. Books only count in circumstances where you have the time to actually read them and getting permanent information(memorizing a book pretty much) takes some time.

And Nuke, that wasnt a hint, thats just a fact. Going fast is its own reward. Especially with rampaging demon(from the perspective of this game, shits beyond a rampage in Demonhood time).

You tell everyone else that you are gonna go find some books. This is met by groans from the soldiers and exclamations of "Thats not such a bad idea." From the scholars. The old man does not care, as he is wearing his rabbit on his head. You ask him what his name is, but he proudly states that he is Stillmount. Barring some sort of odd avatar of a city thing, you highly doubt he is Stillmount. However it would imply that Lord Walter owns him. Once you answer with that, the old man runs back into the castle. 5 minutes pass and the old man returns, ecstatic that Walter told him to "Get the hell out of the castle!" and he had complied and thus fulfilled his duties.

You then leave in search of books. The market mostly sells either food and tools for the peasants or luxuries for the rich. Books are in relatively short supply, as this city does not have an university as Dolnar-On-Barr did. You spend several hours, simply searching for anything. You tried libraries, but they would not sell their books. After a while, however you meet up with the old man. He asks you for some coins, and you choose to give some to him. He tells you to wait and runs off. He soon returns, with 2 books and hands them to you. One a military manual, and the other a cookbook. You ask the old man where he got them. He tells you that the rabbit sold them to him. Soon after, a person from the library runs by and asks you if you have seen anyone carrying any books, cause some got stolen. By this point you had hidden the books behind your back, so luckily he did not see them. The person then runs off again.

Safe from capture, you grab the old man and drag him back to the rest of your group and attempt to leave as soon as you can. The old man is still adamant that he bought the books fair and square, and that the only one at fault is the provider, who is the rabbit sitting in his lap. You continue on your journey after a day of rest.

The rest of the way, you see no bandits and it all goes peacefully. Either there simply werent any, or they heard of your almost nonexistant reputation. You do have some reputation with 24 prisoners though. It takes another 4 days to get to Barrsmouth and what you see is more city than any in Barrtal. A bustling port, where traders come and go. Trade ships from everywhere accessible by boat, from the far reaches of Tokzoku to Mughae, bringing spices and luxury goods in exchange for the goods that Nagaron gets from selling food to the Eastern Confederacy and its own liquers. The trade is extremely profitable to Nagaron, and is what drives its prosperity.

There are many places where you could search for the Gehenna family, from the inns and questioning the peasantry, up to going directly to the lord of this city, or asking for access to the town records. So, where do you search?

Read military, demon book, and science book.
Looking for anything specific, just reading, or looking for things in common between them?

Actualy. I like the idea of looking for something similar between the science and military book. It could help to notice the signs of a possible demon attack.

Since you have plenty of time, I will just do both actions. Not that they differ a whole lot.

After arriving you go into the city itself and find an inn. You rest until the next day, to start the search in the morning. The inn is exceedingly overpriced, but for right now you dont have a problem with that. The rooms are not bad either, the beds are soft. You lay down on your bed and go to sleep. Your dreams are lower quality than the inn, and mostly just blurry flashes of a demon eating cherries.

The next morning you decide to read all the books you have. With the sole exception of the cookbook. The rest of the party is not particularly happy about the fact that you are just sitting around, but they stop complaining when you tell them that its their turn, you already did your part. The party then disperses after agreeing to meet up at noon. Everyone goes their own way. Only the old man remains to disturb your peace, but luckily he seems to be either whispering words of power or about his socks to his pet rabbit. You suspect its the sock speech.

You delve into the books. The demon book you already read beforehand, but you reread it. It mostly deals with legends and stories, but might provide some clues on how to kill them. Silver is a given, but the rest you have not heard much of. Mirrors and some specific and rare plants[Notes: Nightbloom]. Of particular note is a story of how a demon turned good and learned about sharing with others through the magic of locking it in a temple and throwing bricks at it.

The military manual you have not read before. Apparently meant for generals. A lot of it is how to keep up morale and how to keep an army of peasants under control. But there is the occasional gem concerning feints, counterattacks and flanking that could come in handy. The book seems to be a big proponent of falling back when things are looking bad, and getting to better terrain. It might seem like a given, but you some commanders are stubborn to a ridicilous degree. Talk of feints makes you look back into the demon book. You look through the stories concerning armies and notice a trend, while demonic armies would sometimes leave stragglers, they would not turn down the opportunity to attack a weaker target. Or a target that seems weaker. After thoroughly reading it you find yourself knowing just a bit more about military tactics and about keeping up more.

The science book you have memorized from beginning to end, but its nice to have around when you forget something. It doesnt hold much specifics, but speaks generally about everything from geography to cauterizing wounds. It even speaks a paragraph about magic. Reading it doesnt give you any great revelations, but its still good to get a refresher on everything.

When you are done, you look around your room. The old man has run off to do something and the others have not returned. You wait a while longer. And a while once more. You wait until everyone has returned, but are stopped by the fact that not everyone returns. The old man and one of the scholars remain missing. You wait a couple of hours more, but they still do not show up. You question everyone else if they had seen them. Nobody had seen the old man, but last they heard about the scholar, he was snooping around the docks and questioning some merchants.

The group decides to go looking for them, and you follow them. As you get closer to the docks, you hear some people talking about a murder. You search around until you find that a lot of guards have gathered around a ship. You go closer, and notice that lying on the dock is dead body of what is apparently a sailor. The old man and the scholar are also here, but they are being held by the guards as prisoners. The old man keeps shouting that the sailor was filled with evil, but the scholar is silent. The guards do not seem to believe what the old man is saying.

What do you do about this situation? Do you ask around, or do you go straight to the scholars and old mans defense? Or maybe just the scholars?

Ask to inspect the body. See if the dead man was a demon based on what your demon book says. Find out as much as you can before you try and help the two.

+1. Also, don't forget to present your credentials. And, what's most important, you want to find something anyway. If you cannot find any traces of demonic influence in the dead sailor, just make something up, using herbs, fire and colored smoke to perform a "test" to give yourself some credibility.

If your companions are found guilty of murder, at very least your reputation will take a huge blow. At worst, you will be arrested with them as their leader. Capturing these bandits boosted your credibility here, so you are more than able to pull this up and gain even more. Remember, this is for the common good.

You are the "de facto" leader simply because you are very active compared to the others but the official one is Paul. Also, you captured the bandits in Stillmount, this is Barrsmouth. You couldnt use the rep of bandit killing right now, but if you get thrown in jail, word of you will reach here eventually and you might be bailed out if you get lucky.
