Allow walls to be built on floors!
« on: February 05, 2012, 03:19:32 am »

All references to walls/floors in this post are from the b -> C menu.  :)

Constructing castles/forts/towers/faces above ground is a bit frustrating right now, because walls cannot be built on floors! The 'construction present' text pops up in red.

Instead of this, I suggest that the floor is automatically deconstructed (Perhaps at 2x speed?), and then reconstructed as a wall.
Another option would be to allow construction, and in the material list you'll be able to see whatever the floor is made of at 0 distance. Selecting this will deconstruct the floor and construct a wall. Selecting another material will deconstruct the floor, place the material nearby, and build the wall out of a new material.

Please share your thoughts  :)

That...actually sounds like a pretty good idea.

Absolutely, you should be able to build over floors. +1

Loud whisper, may we know why?

Being able to floor a whole level, then build walls over it would be really cool.

I agree with that, because building massive bridges was a very painful and annoying experience because you have to build floor, then build wall, then you need to destroy constructed floors so you could build walls there.

Also, am I the only one old enough to remember the days when we had to build every single wall and floor one by one? Pfff, the kids those days...

This is a good idea, and I think it's pretty unique.  I haven't seen it before.

What happens if you want to remove the floor below the wall?
That's one of the reasons that you can't, the other reason is the way that constructions are treated in game. Constructions are treated the same as stone for all intense and porpoises [sic].

What, the floor you're building the wall over? Either do it yourself if you're that concerned about saving the material, or have it like the OP suggested so that it automatically gets deconstructed and replaced with the wall.

I would have suggested this if I had remembered to write it down. Good suggestion. After all, you can build walls on living rock floor, so why not on floor built from blocks? And if you're going to allow walls to be built on it, then clearly you should allow ramps and (up) stairs too.

This would be very handy for creating any solid-fill z-level above a walkable level, which I am currently doing in my fort, without constantly building and breaking down scaffold flooring (since floor isn't mobile, as true scaffolding would be).

It's interesting to think about the resource problem, though.
  • If you build a wall tile alone, that's 1 resource unit used per square.
  • If you build a floor tile alone, that's also 1 unit.
  • But if you build a floor and then a wall on it, you've used 2 units per square for a wall that's functionally the same as in point 1.
Perhaps the walls constructed in two steps, first floor and then wall, as in 3, could take longer to deconstruct or destroy with siege weapons when that's implemented? Or you could just say that you've traded some resources for a measure of convenience.

Another option would be to implement true, portable scaffolding, but I don't know what that would look like -- although it's been suggested several times, I note.

Did you know that if you write 3.14 on a piece of paper and hold it in a mirror, it will say pie? And if you divide 42 by 3.14... you get 13.37!
