Only 8 soldiers out of 50 civilians?

I am disappoint.

You need 100 soldiers for every dwarf to survive DF. That said, no one has managed to turn one dwarf into two soldiers yet.

Step 1: Chop the arms off.
Step 2: Wait for Toady to release the next patch.
Step 3: Reanimate the arms.

1 dwarf = 3 soldiers.
Profit?

Edit: Or am I mistaken and !!NECROMANCY!! isn't the answer to everything?

GET'OUTTA ME LAWN OR I'LL FLING ARMS AT'YE. ARMS, I TELL YE!

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

I could try to pull a double-Bronzemurder... I've already sealed myself in the engraving/food/smelting room. Thirst and food won't be a problem (though food will be in a couple years unless Goden becomes a legendary fisherman or the farms start up soon)... should I just avoid the outside world entirely? I won't have any wood supplies and run out of food eventually unless I make a farm. I can't reclaim, I don't even know where the fort is anymore. We do have a lot of stone at our disposal... as well as ~350 turtles, the last of our (expensive) biscuits, some plants, and a shit-ton of seeds.

Possibly if I gave you the save file you could either laugh at my horrendous architecture and maybe set up a better plan? I'm still new to the "defense" business and will die if I try anything.

Don't give up. If a caravan comes, the Forgotten Beast will probably run towards it and the guards might be able to kill it. If it takes 5 years for you to finally kill it, wait 5 years. Then, glorious, glorious victory. No surrender. Only death.

Okay, but my Depot is in the mountain and the FB hardly stays in one place. Plus, if they don't kill it in one swoop, he'll never die. The FB apparently heals super-fucking-fast.

I got access to every part of my fort except the top part, which is where all wood is. I can still survive down here; fish, make metal things. I just need more bitcoal... and a stone stockpile underground.

I'll finish Goden's tomb though. That's for sure.

Migrants came. I told them to seal the base's top floor inside. Then, I unblocked the staircase, somehow making it into a downward-only-staircase, and nobody could get down until I made another. The engraver started to mine towards the river, died of thirst, Goden finished it. The migrants all died, Goden completed the well.

Constant supply of water now, without pathfinding worries.

It said that migrants didn't come this season, though. Oh well.

They'll come eventually, so will a caravan.

Not that I'll let them have any food.

Caravan came.

They shot the beast in the heart and tore open his body.

The forgotten beast is dead.

Yes.
