Industrial Fortress?
« on: February 04, 2012, 07:33:42 pm »

So I was just curious about this: Has anyone tried to or have found a good reason to instigate an industrial revolution in your fortress, is it possible, are there any mega-projects which are related?

What do you mean exactly?  Setting up lots of mechanic workshops, forges, smelters, etc and having the dwarves work all day in them?

Unfortunately, I find that industrialization is mostly unnecessary after a few years of playtime.  The militia is armed and armored, crafts buy anything you need and a single farm keeps the dwarves fed.

Soap revolution, steel buildings for everyone, houses built for mass profit and an expansive textiles industry?

You betcha.

There was a farming mod a while back that changed that kind of stuff. Or if you're cheap {like me} you can just mod the plant raws and triple the grow times on these things.

Or, for added challenge, do outdoor farming, the first time is like relearning the game.

I do stuff similar to this. I build anything and everything I could out of metals, I forged constantly, burned enough coal and charcoal in 'em to put a nice hole in Ozone. All I need were big iron smoke stacks sticking of the mountain. That fortress ended with my constant attempts to create a working cannon out of barrels filled with alcohol.

My fortress is in the Post-industrial information age. My dwarves are mostly involved in services and entertainment. A majority of my dwarves are novice level (rusty) barristas with nose rings, bad attitudes, and terrible screenplays.

hah.

When I meant industrial revolution I meant really if anyone had built something similar to a giant factory to produce various and worthless items. A massive multi z-level affair with fire and smoke and assembly lines. An example I guess, would be an obsidian factory.

My production area is primarily for grinding stone. It is a cross shaped area usually just above the first cavern that covers 4 z lvls.
1. Top floor: finished stockpiles Bars/blocks/clothing/cut gems/furniture
2. Main Floor is where the workshops are. x5 or more craft-dwarf shops, x5 or more Masonry shops, x2 Mechanic Shops, x5 or more smelters, x5 or more forges, x2 glass furnaces, x2 kilns, an ashery, x5 or more carpentry shops, x5 or more wood-burners, x2 bowyers' shops, 1 or 2 siege workshops, x2 jewelers, x2 or more clothiers' shops, x2 or more leather-workers' shops, a dyer and a loom.
3. Raw materials and magma pipes for forges, stone, wood, rough gems, thread, cloth, leather.
4. Auxiliary economic stone stockpile.

Farmers workshop is in the kitchens, and tannery is next to the butcher's shop next to another crafts-dwarf shop to process bones and shells.
