Appointment/Election of a Mayor
« on: February 03, 2012, 11:58:16 pm »

Do you get any kind of announcement when a mayor is appointed or elected?  I was working along happily, fighting off the (year late) elven ambush, and cleaning up after it when i noticed I now had a mayor that wasn't my expedition leader (I guess his skills weren't as good as the lazy hauler that replaced her).

I looked back through both the in game messages (a) and checked <DF dir>/gamelog.txt and couldn't find anything about a mayor being elected/appointed.  Did I miss something, or is that just how it works?

I'm pretty sure I missed the appointment by less than a month, as it was 20 Hematite when I noticed Dobar was the mayor and back on 27 Felsite Iton was still the Expedition Leader/Broker/Manager/Bookkeeper.

If there is an announcement, I've never noticed it.

There used to be an announcement, I know that.

I also know there isn't one now.

Not sure when it vanished.

Yeah you can replace the mayor. Doesn't make sense for an elected official, but anywho.

So I've heard that pets that can talk can become mayor.

How the heck that works?

Creatures with the [INTELLIGENT] tag (Which, admittedly, doesn't actually grant intelligence) or the [CAN_LEARN] tag can learn social skills.

Your mayor is (generally) the civilisation entity with the highest social skills, since they tend to have the most friends.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

Yeah, from what it looks like I can switch them back.  I'm more interested in getting notified that an election has been held in the first place.

There used to be an announcement back in 40d, but in 0.31.xx it went away.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
