Recommendations for new pc :D
« on: February 02, 2012, 04:47:15 pm »

Ok so I'm gonna buy a new pc soon but I don't know alot bout this kinda stuff :P
I would like something that's able to run Skyrim that costs between 500-1000 Euro(650-1300$), can go abit over 1000 but I would rather not.
So... can you give me some good recommendations? :) I have alot faith in you b12 ;)
If you think my description is too vague I could add further information :)

It's very vague. Are you looking to build one or buy one off the shelf?

Well, it's unlikely "a store" will carry the specific model you're looking for. Best to buy it online.

I haven't messed with pre-built systems in years (other than to try and fix them :P), so I'm not much help here.

But I can say this. A large chunk of your cash ends up going toward a monitor in a package deal. Browsing Newegg, which is a pretty good site all around, their pre-built packages are shit. Over-priced, almost no decent graphics cards that come with them. So even if you bought one of those, to do "good" gaming on it, you'd end up needing to buy a video card and install it.

Able to run Skyrim? No more than $1300? You don't want to listen to the condescending tech-guys telling you that building a PC is the single easiest thing? Look no further, child.

I've got me a Toshiba Satellite laptop that's nearing the 2.5 year mark, and it runs Skyrim like a champ. Cost me $1100 back then, so I'm assuming a similar computer will be like $300 right now but screw that get something cutting-edge. Unless you want a desktop. I've got no advice for people who like desktops.

It's not about getting something cutting edge. It's about investing money in something rather than throwing money at something. If you just want to blow $300 to $600 on a laptop, it'll run Skyrim. Probably. You can go to Best Buy and find something like that.

Whether it will run anything else you put on it is another story.

Well...being able to run Skyrim wasn't really my goal rather the standard I tried to set. And I'm somewhat suspicios towards laptops since I have experience of them slowing down alot after a year or so...

Thats accually quite impressive (in my humble opinion) but unfortunately a desktop is what I'm looking for.

Look for a good computer store in-city. There's one in my city that lets you pick the parts and they'll sell you it for the cost of parts and put it together for $15 more. Hell, they even have pre-made packages that they put together, and the packages look pretty good.

All you need to do is find the right computer store and they'll probably have something that will work. You just need to find it. Call around and see if any local stores do their own computer builds. Places like that should be able to help put together something, just be sure to check the average price of the parts before you buy it.

I bought my laptop around 4 years ago for 1500, and now the same laptop is still around 1000$

My advice is to browse newegg.com and get one from there

I've been shopping around for a new desktop myself and I think I've settled on a new HP Elite Desktop or at least something on that par and then a cheap maybe used laptop or netbook. Don't get a cheap HP though, go with another manufacturer if you want something cheaper.

Desktops are cheaper, last longer and are more useful for the price you pay for them. A laptop is pointless if it's just going to sit on a desk anyways and if you do travel, you can get both. Laptops get a lot of wear and tear if you travel with them and a large, expensive 'desktop-replacement' laptop isn't a good idea if you do plan to travel with one, it's going to get trashed and it'll be expensive to replace. Desktops are a better choice for your money if you are going to run demanding programs like 3D games.

I'd say a high-end 'premium' desktop that'll last a while and stay upgradable and useful and a more-or-less disposable laptop for using the internet and playing music and whatnot when you travel. High-end laptops are a crappy compromise between these two.
