Author Topic: A project I fully plan to complete - turning boatmurdered into ePub for ereaders  (Read 4177 times)

I'm going through the original boatmurdered and converting it into ePub format so we could read them on ereaders. I'm using Sigil for all the actual work. I was going to use Calibre, but apparently it can't do everything I need it to, most notably adding chapters and formatting cleanly.

I'm using this picture as the cover (from the website I stole it from), unless someone says I shouldn't or that I should use a different picture.

Unfortunately I don't know how to (or even if I can) include pictures that will format correctly. ePub supports vector graphics, and I'd have to research how to convert jpg and then make sure things format, and whatever headaches are attached to that endeaver. Thus, at least for now, I'm going to be editing all that out, along with all references to pictures. If I can't figure out how to cut out the reference, I'll at least put a little blurb to describe the picture.

Anyways, wish me luck!

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

You can't. You'd need permission from the writers, which some of them aren't willing to give( mostly because people never ask them).

So don't start, it'l be shot down soon . You 're not the first one to try this, it has been tried on at least 2 occasions.

The boatmurdered guys would refuse the use of this as a free work? I do not understand this.
I doubt BM even has any copywrite patent or whatever...

As far as i am aware, no intellectual property that isn't commercially sold have any rights to refuse it being distributed for non profit. It's not like hes claiming its his own work.

and if they try.... well thats just being a dick. People like your work and want to share it.

I Searched the forums and found one of the other attempts.

How much I would like to read Boatmurdered on my E-reader, I'm afraid you're just wasting your time.

They literally put the work into the public domain by putting it on a public forum for everyones use.

He's not claiming intellectual rights.
He's not attempting to sell or profit by it.
He's going to give the credit to who it's due.
Fuck them.

You cant hand out something for free to the public domain, then once it becomes popular suddenly decide you want to lump a price tag on it for the right to distribute it unedited for free.
He's doing them a favor, they should be suitably greatful.

This is just the type of shit you'd expect from Something Awful.

As far as I understood they only stopped it because they didn't like that nobody asked them anything. Maybe you can try to ask them for permission first ?

I guess the others assumed they would be greatful that other people are spending their free time to help spread the influence and accessability of their work, and not asking for a wage or any payment whatsoever for doing so.

They should be greatful.

Asking permission is like saying "Please oh please can I spend my time putting your work into a format so even more people can read it".

Fuck that, hes doing them a favor, though I'm sure he will ask out of pure courtesy.

Something Awful isn't a public forum, it has a membership fee. And posting on a forum only gives reproduction rights to the owners and maintainers of the forum itself; it's not public property just because everyone can read it.

Asking permission is like saying "Please oh please can I spend my time putting your work into a format so even more people can read it".

Asking permission is like saying "I want to do this, and you have the legal right to prevent me from doing it. Are you willing to waive that right?" It's the proper and polite thing to do- plus you have insurance that they won't sue your ass.

I seriously doubt the legality of your statements.

+I'd love to see them embaress themselves by trying to sue someone for doing them a favor for free and attaching the credits correctly. It would be the most retarded trial in history.

I'm not saying they're going to sue, I'm saying that it's a total dick move to illegally reproduce someone else's intellectual property without consulting them. Seriously, it would take fifteen minutes to fire off the PMs, and there's no reason they would say no. What's the point of purposefully choosing not to ask permission?

And i'm saying its a totally dick move to stop people doing things for them, for free, and attaching the credits entirely to them. Whether they asked or not.

There have been worse trials. Like the person sueing(and winning) and microwave producing compangy because she put her pet in it to dry and it died.

Also, they don't need to sue. Toady One doesn't want any (copyrights) problems so he'll probably lock this thread just like the other . (That is, if the OP decides not to contact the original authors)

That's arguably true, but it's also perfectly legal. When you produce a thing, be it a novel or a forum post or a song, you become the copyright holder of that thing from the moment that you can prove you produced it. In the case of a forum, by posting your work you are giving reproduction rights to the forum owner so that they can put it on their site. At this point, there are three entities I know of who have reproduction rights to Boatmurdered: the original posters, Something Awful, and the LP Archive. The work is not public domain, and therefore it's illegal to copy it without permission.

I suppose to avoid the whole copyright law stuff I'm just going to have to make my own hard copy for personal use, I wonder if there is someplace where you can make single copies of hard cover books for personal fun
Making a hard copy is the essence of a breach of copyright in the book publishing industry. If you make a hard copy, even as stripped down as a manuscript format printout, you are legally making a declaration that you have a right to do that. And you do not. Printing rights belong to the intellectual property holder of a work, and are licensed out on their say so.

Yes, you can still do it. But you are not legally entitled to do it, and you should stop advertising that you are or querying for help in doing this here.

^

For the purposes of this post, "hard copy" is interchangeable with "eReader version".
