SwordFortress: Tales of the Automaton Cult
« on: January 31, 2012, 01:04:14 am »

Here begins the story of the mighty Swordfortress, its rise to power, and its eventual conquering of the very laws which shaped the land and sea.

We arrived, in the early spring of the year six.

The party, led by Asteth the carpenter considered of two miners, Kubuk and Fikod, the masons Dakost and Zuntir, the fisherdwarf Urvad Ablelkel, and finally, me, the doctor, Urvad Atheldasel. Despite the fact that we had no soldiers with us, nor any intention of fighting anyone on this tiny island, we are called the Swordfortress.

First things first. Since we are so near the ocean, it seems sensible to set up there and start fishing.

Since there is no grass here to feed our livestock, Asteth sent one of the miners down to check for cavers, and any moss or fungus they might be filled with. Failing that... it will be a few more days before we need to worry about food.
As the miners got to work we began moving the goods we brought down to our site.

Unfortunately, it rather quickly began to rain. We didn't mind too much, though Asteth was grumbling a bit.

In any case, the miner Kubuk rather quickly accomplished his objective.

He moved over into what seemed to be a pillar that extended a fair way downward, and began digging farther down in search of a floor.

I'm finished writing for now, I'll add more after I get some more work done.

So, long story short, this fort is being run with one goal, and one goal only. To eventually construct a device which will, when given appropriate inputs, automatically build any given (possible) structure from cast obsidian. I've worked out most of the details of what I'm going to do, and decided to have some fun while playing with the design. Hence this story. Besides, the name was too good not to write a story about.

It's going to take awhile before I've got enough workers/materials to start work on the device proper, so if that's all you're interested in be prepared to wait a while. I'm saving the post directly below this to post the current status of the device, though I will of course note progress while in character as well.

For the record, this embark is a warm volcanic desert island with little foliage and no neighboring civilizations, so things will be boring on the siege front. This fortress wasn't meant to get into battles.

There wasn't anything in the first cavern we found, but not too long after hitting the bottom of that one...

We had about finished transfering everything to the new site by now, so we took a break and ate some food. Some of us were beginning to get tired, but we didn't have much wood yet, which meant very few beds. We had finished building an office, and I volunteered to take inventory. We've been having some trouble in the cavern, thanks to a wandering Reacher.

In those times when its attention wanders, we rush to set up the walls against it. It seems we shall likely be in time to feed the yaks. I haven't got much time to write, so I will stop for now.

PS Just one more quick note:
We managed to close off a small part of the cavern, despite the attentions of a giant cave spider.

Asteth wanted to try to capture it, but the rest of us managed to convince him that our first priority was to defend ourselves and set up food production. Once we have those two problems taken care of, we can begin worrying about building up money for our project.
