Recording Background Noise
« on: January 27, 2012, 06:01:13 pm »

I got this program called Music Creator 6 for Christmas, but the software itself is not the issue here (unless it is, which is why I supplied the name).

Anyway, I've been trying to record some guitar tracks. I've tried plugging my guitar into the amp, then into the mic jack on the side of my computer, and also plugging the guitar straight into the laptop, but whichever way I do it I get this annoying static-ey sound. I think it might be a result of internal noise from the laptop; if so, how can I circumvent this?

I thank anyone (in advance) for help.

Noise filtering, a common feature seen in most audio editting programs.
If it dosent have that, go look up audacity.

annoying static-ey sound

2.8 million search results for "guitar laptop static"

Misc suggestions:

1) Use the "line in" rather than "microphone" port.
2) Try disconnecting your charger and running on battery power alone.
3) Play with windows volume and "loudness" settings. In particular, try muting everything not related to what you're doing.
4) Put EMI filters/shielding on your cables. You can probably pick up some ferrite rings at your local electronics hobby supplier for a few dollars.
5) Try a different input device and see if you still have the same problem. Might come to using a desktop instead of your laptop.

The microphone port is for a microphone, and as such it is POWERED. Plugging anything else into it is not recommended. Use the "line in" port (normally light blue).
