Artifact Anvil~

"Relieved mansion", a zinc anvil!

This is a zinc anvil. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with green zircon and encircled with bands of llama bone. On the item is an image of diamonds in zinc. On the item is an image of Solon, the diety of discipline, depicted as a male dwarf in moose leather. Solon is striking a triumphant pose. On the item is an image of Catten Toolchucked the dwarf and Eliye Dunecomets the Sunny Twighlight the roc in yak bone. The artwork relates to the dwarf Catten Toolchucked's confrontation of the roc Eliye Dunecomets the Sunny Twilight.

Now.. artifact items always have bonuses right?
*builds a new forge* yaaay I'm the only dwarf with a ZINC ANVIL!

God of discipline in leather, indeed  :P

I would totally start making dresses for all the dorfs and kitting them out with leather masks. And, of course, all steel armour, except pants of any sort.

You'll get more than twice the value increase in your fort from an artifact anvil. Once simply because it was crafted and once again for being part of a building. If you've not already exhausted your supply of enemies you might expect larger numbers.

Hmm, it's not magma-safe, so if he puts it in a magma-forge, would he get an eternal ‼Artifact Anvil‼?

YES! An actual attack in 253 might test the new glass serrated disc weapon traps I'm building.

I've almost got enough bone crossbows to arm my dorfs!

But I'm out of trees for building enough beds. >.<;

I'm really liking this world. Turned up savagery on world-gen.

In the current version, fire/magma-safety checks on job items are broken - besides, using an unsafe item wouldn't actually have any noticeable effect.
If you've patched your version of DF (as described here), then you simply won't be able to select it when building a forge, magma or otherwise (since it isn't fire-safe either).

Also, why on earth would you expect an ‼artifact anvil‼ when zinc isn't flammable?!

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Zinc *can* be burned (into ZnO) in the real world; this has been used since at least Roman times e.g. in the production of brass via shaft furnace ~200 AD.  ZnO is referenced even earlier as a medical compound (clearly by ~100 AD, possibly as early as ~500 BC).  It should be at least vaporizable in DF.  Real world stats: melting point 419.5 °C, boiling point 907 °C, typical temperatures for "burning" into ZnO about 1,000 °C; compare to DF magma temperatures (~1,111 °C).  DF stats: MELTING_POINT:10755 °U, BOILING_POINT:11633 °U, compare to DF magma temperature at 12,000 °U.

Note from the wiki: "Rarely, dwarves in strange moods will make anvils out of other metals; due to a bug, the game permits them to be used in any forge regardless of their fire or magma safety. The material used does not seem to affect the performance of the forge, nor does the anvil's quality."  It's not actually clear whether this is a bug; if *artifact* anvils are in fact by their "magical" nature immune to fire and heat no matter what their material, you should be able to build a forge around one, and in fact this may be how the First Forge was constructed.

So one would expect (I haven't tested this) that in DF a normal bar or other object of zinc exposed to magma would be destroyed and leave a cloud of "boiling zinc" at some point.  Artifacts are generally known to resist destruction, so it's a fairly good question what would happen.  I don't *think* you'd end up with a situation where a not-yet-constructed anvil produced a steady cloud of boiling zinc vapor but remains unconsumed, but given the weird handling of objects it's at least remotely possible.    Make a copy of the fort and find out for ‼science‼ :)

somewhat unrelated question: Quietust, can you give me a link on how to patch Df according to that report? I have no idea how....

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

The dwarf Urist McCarpenter has finished Beardbone, the nethercap Wooden Anvil! It menaces with spikes of yak brains!

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.
