Oh well, it was worth asking. Now, I have a nice animal for my zoo, at least!

If I remember correctly, if you have any free tiles around your depot, if you build a cage that has a creature in it next to the depot, then just dismantle the cage, it should then be in the depots trade screen. I've done it with gobs and creaturemen, but I don't remember getting much for them.

Seriously? I'll have to try this one, thanks! (unfortunately, I recently lost my fortress, and my pet dragon, after breaching an hollow spire... I am just too greedy, damn it! Next time, I will prepare some cave-in traps, to close the tunnel and squash a few bugs in the process...)

I dunno how to quote, but to all the people tryin it, my setup was a 5x5 depot room, with an extra tile dug out to build cage. so when it was dismantled, it only had the depot tiles as a place to put it. then pause and forbid. its been a while since I've played, as I have no computer atm, so if I'm wrong sorry for the wild goose chase

The unfortunate thing is that swimming pathfinding does not work terribly well. Monsters will often take up residence in a lake and stay there indefinitely, luxuriating in the water instead of searching properly for a way to continue to wreak havoc. Your best bet is to lure it out with surplus dwarves stationed on the water's edge, but even then there might not be an immediate response.

I agree. This problem is also seen with forgotten beasts swimming in underground lakes - they won't charge your staircase to the fort unless they leave the water. The best way to get them to leave the water is to lure them with a dwarf or animal.

Rerailing the thread a bit, I think I know why - I believe that non-waterbound creatures don't attempt to pathfind underwater, so it'll just sit there not having anywhere to go.
