Okay here's the deal...

Whenever Photoshop is open, the spacebar in Dwarf Fortress don't work. Now it won't pause (or resume.)

I tried reassigning the pause key (when photoshop WASN'T open) but the backspace don't work either.

I would very much like to be able to work on Photoshop projects while I wait for things to happen in Dwarf Fortress (things are going very slow) Is there some way to force the spacebar to work?

I couldn't. It said "press backspace to delete binding" but nothing happened.

Are you reassigning this using DF or what? Because this normally shouldn't happen...

Yeah, I go into the options menu to try this.

You can also alter the keybindings in "\data\init\interface.txt".

The one you want is:
[BIND:D_PAUSE:REPEAT_NOT]
[SYM:0:Space]
