Above and Below Ground
« on: January 29, 2012, 12:34:57 am »

I have read the wiki about this but I wanted to make absolutely sure:

Is there a way to change a tile labelled "Above Ground" to "Subterranean"? I really don't want my waterfall freezing during the winter :(

Thanks in advance.

Nope. Maybe someone made a tile-editing tool that can do that, but it isn't possible in-game to reverse that change.

Bugger, all well at least I found this out in my test waterfall and not the actual one.

Best thing you could do in-game would be to floor over the river leading up to the waterfall

I don't think this works. A tile that is 'above ground-light' will always be above ground light.

Nope.  Floor it over, and it's considered inside and light  Should let it stay liquid, in theory.

No this is what should happen but according to wiki
Quote from: MagmaWiki
Light vs Dark and Above Ground vs Subterranean

Currently these two attributes are determined in exactly the same way. Once an area is exposed to the outside world, it is Above Ground and Light (and thus channeling this tile will make the tile below it also Above Ground and Light). Even after being covered up again, it will remain this way. This allows growing outdoor crops inside safely.

EDIT
I found a way to solve the problem, any ice near magma (2 tiles away on the same z level) will melt. This also prevents water freezing in the first place. Found it on the wiki in the freezing section. Thanks for all you answers.

It'll be inside-light-above ground. That "above ground" is what's important; only subterranean tiles are protected from the weather. Floored-over water will freeze.
