So I fired up DF for the first time in a year or so yesterday, determined to have some good old-fashioned !!fun!!

I choose a nifty-looking embark site: soil and clay on the surface, flux stone, and both deep and shallow metals. No surface magma, but I'd deal with that later. It's just a little cold.

So I dig out my initial home, get some beds made, start moving stuff inside, the usual, when the snow starts melting. And as it does, I see this near the wagon:

Every single one of those remains is at least one dead rat. There are probably a hundred in that screenshot alone. I only brought two cats, so I'm not sure if they're the cause, but I've got a bunch of dead rats all over the place. What gives?

you struck vermin heaven, it happened to me sometimes, be careful though! they may be fortress dedstroyers (monarch butterflies anyone?)!

I don't see why they would be considered a Judas. *krenshala glances down at his own sig block* I think the vermin know quite well which team they are playing for.

Rats have a tendency to appear in swarms. That seems small compared to the worse I've found... :d

That's normal, elephant rain is when you should get worried.

I swear to Armok, swamps and jungles have it the worst. So many rats. Did you settle in a warm and wet environment by any chance?

The embark screen said that it was a cold biome, and the snow sticking around until early autumn or so seems to confirm that. It is pretty wet, constantly raining or snowing.
