Let's Play ArmA 2 with Folk ARPS!
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:35:12 pm »

Hello gents!

I've been given the good fortune of having a decent (in 2008) rig, which means I can run ArmA2. More than that, I can record it! I've been joining the wonderful Folk ARPS group, which came about from the Rock Paper Shotgun community. It's been great fun, and I've started to record and edit the missions I participate in.

I am uploading them and keeping them in the following playlist.

I suggest you watch The Colonels for some good funtimes, Cacheola for a mission ending in disaster, Fort Bean for one of the tensest multiplayer experiences I've ever had, and Shilkas of Nur for a larger, more serious mission.

Folk ARPS are great guys - no super duper serious milsim hardcore stuff going on there, but you WILL see quite a few dozen people working together as a team. The Sunday sessions are usually around the 50-60 player count, and the Tuesday ones are usually around 40. That's at 7.30 GMT.

I'll keep this thread updated as more come out :)

Had a pretty interesting session this Sunday :)

We started with Clergyman, where Bravo was slaughtered in a matter of minutes during a glorious charge. You can tell how quick the massacre was because the video is around 5m :P

We had another Crash Site adversarial where our Alpha chopper landed RIGHT ON TOP of the other chopper, without letting anyone know. Much death followed. Much death.

The session continued with the absolutely epic Vanguard SE coop, which took about one hour to complete. We were destroyed by mortars, but the few remaining survivors got on a hill and did a massive victory shoot-out. There's an awesome screenshot at the end.

My participation ended crawling through the mud in Internecine, followed by a viking charge on the enemy compound, to the shouts of "VALHALLA" and "you're asking for it", after which the guy who was screaming Valhalla was promptly shot down. Followed closely by yours truly.

'twas good fun! And remember, everyone's free to join :) No mods, no complicated set up, just come on in and have fun!

As usual, playlist is here.

This week's Sunday shenanigans were hampered by ArmA-wide VON problems. I am going to claim that is the main reason why I was brutally murderised and/or incapable for the first three missions.

Luckily, things got better in the last few missions. There was some great flanking tractor action in The Holy Stones, and some absolutely hilarious foot shooting in Fuel Utopia, followed by pun after pun after pun.

It was great :D

As usual, here's my playlist and the official Folk ARPS channel, which has some other amazing videos from the session!

Had to miss the Tuesday session, but here's some stuff from the Sunday session :)

First up, in CHOLO 2 we were defending a police compound and holding two hostages. It's the first time I've done defense on this mission, and it's TOUGH. You get pinned down almost immediately... and then the enemies come, crash a chopper onto the roof, get confused and shoot each other :D Sorry about all the darkness, turns out YT compressing x2 makes it darker than the original... not that it was easy to see anything!

Second up, a more serious mission in Running Rabbit. We had a tank we needed to escort down a valley, past two very heavily defended towns and gulleys. Alpha squad was the assault element, getting into the thick of it, and Bravo squad was the base of fire element, up on the hills shooting at all the things that moved. Bravo had a Medium Machine Gun element attached to it. As Bravo 2 fireteam leader, I did a terrible job at keeping on top of things and getting my fireteam into places where they could engage effectively. The MMG was usually much more effective... either way, there's another video that shows a multi-perspective between an Alpha fireteam and MMG1, which was with us. Worth seeing for the other side of things!

Finally, we ended in two hilarious sessions of Crash Site, where we must get to a crashed C-130. The problem? Well, we might say our pilots are not the most skilled. Hilariousness ensues! Plus, there was some singing, and much dying! If you want to see how it's actually done, see the perspective from the OTHER team in the first session and second session:P

Hope you guys enjoy it!

Well, that didn't go so well :P

And after a successful mission, where the Folk Platoon quite proficiently sanitised and blew up three chinooks surrounded by angry farmers, the extract... could've gone better.

And then, a textbook operation in Blackfolk Down where Alpha and Bravo cleared a villa, and then Alpha covered the approaches while Bravo searched the inside. This went really well, but I lost one guy stupidly :(

Hope you guys enjoyed it. There's a few more clips with other POVs from other members of Folk ARPS. Let me know if you're interested and I'll post them.

As usual, I'm also open to feedback. It's getting kinda lonely in here :P

Due to overwhelming B12 interest in these things (oh, sarcasm, you so crazy), here are a few more.

First off, Zitron bullseyed my nose with a grenade during Holy Stones, because I was an idiot...

Then, Tree Huggers was what I'm starting to think is the regular experience in AI+Chernarus. Didn't see anyone, got shot infinitely many times! The bit at the end is me trying to figure out what the heck is happening and what I'm supposed to as acting CO of a very depleted platoon - all while eating dinner!

And finally, some nice flanking action in a new radio segment I'd like to call StrangTime.
