I've been playing DF off and on for about the last year and a half or so, but have largely put it on hold due to distractions from school. Since I still have a week off before classes, I've been binging on it, and actually made a very successful, self-sustaining fort with a population of 85-95, tons of booze and food, an awesome dining hall with a waterfall in it, and just an overall pleasing layout. It was the first fort I started to smooth out and begin a small military with, having finally realized what smoothing does, and figuring out the basics of the military menu. I have pretty much all of the basics down, except the clothing industries, and anything involving soap and the hospitals.

But, because I realized there were no Goblin civilizations nearby, I promptly ended the fort by visiting the Circus.

Now, I have embarked on a new area. It's nothing particularly special, noteworthy, or anything like that (no glitched out cotton candy veins stretching into sub-orbit), but to me it just looks awesome, and I want to somehow take advantage of this layout. Essentially, there is a river on the top of the mountain where I embarked that flows down into a 5-story water fall. Shortly after that, the river forks off in two directions. The layout has lots of varying elevations and nooks and crannies within the mountain, giving it quite the interesting layout. Here are some screenshots of it (Warning, images are huge).

(Also apparently the river has alligators in it. Might be FUN.)

I need some ideas on how to make this as Dorfy, FUN, efficient, and/or epic as possible. I like the idea of using the river as decoration inside my fort, either flowing through an entrance or dining hall, and the waterfall would be fun to utilize in a similar manner.

Thanks!

I was thinking of starting one z-level above the lowest part of the river with the mixed soil and rock layer, and then carving my tunnels out over above the river, connecting them with bridges. Not only would it look cool as hell, but I could use it as a form of defense. Goblins rush in, start raising bridges to trap in chunks of the fort, then open some floodgates to wash them down into the river.

The potential for FUN with this is abound.

Life (in dwarf fortress) is a cocophany of flavours, each more succulent than the last - why not sample them all?!
