Militia Commander in bed
« on: January 05, 2012, 10:39:07 am »

My fort has been having some trouble with elk birds recently. I assigned some miners to go after them. One died, one is sitting in bed. He has nerve damage and needs a crutch. I read that dwarves with nerve damage won't get crutches.

Is he a lost cause? He is rather obnoxious.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Actually, there is a medicine for it.

It's called Magmacin.

Do you have a hospital?  He probably needs diagnosis and treatment of his wounds before you can actually see the extent of his injuries.

And make sure that your doctors combined cover all of the medical labors.  It took me a while to figure out why my soldier wasn't getting a crutch when she had a busted foot, even after close to a year.  Turns out I didn't have bone setting turned on on any doctors... switched it on, and moments later said doctor handed her a crutch and she was on her merry way.

Plaster makes it heal faster and safer. Find some gypsum.

I am quite the Militia Commander in bed...  :P

But yeah, like many other have said, you should probably set up all the furniture etc. required for a hospital, even if your militia commander doesn't use it, it will most likely be used in the future of your fort. You also need a cheif medical dwarf if you don't have one already...

He was put in a random bed...
...and then my new Chief Medical Dwarf kept diagnosing him. Over and over and over.

Then he died.

See? You should have administered Magmacin as soon as he was undiagnosable!

Don't feel bad, my militia commander got his foot ripped off by a ghost and then spent three months in the hospital before getting depressed and dragging himself around for the next six months till he died of starvation

I had this dwarf, a woodcutter, who was horrifically mangled in a badger accident.

He sat in the hospital for a few years, the doctor suturing his spine up with bits of deer hair (don't ask). Eventually, he just decided to crawl all the way out of my fort and start cutting down trees. He even managed to crawl away (barely) from a goblin ambush.

Never wanted a crutch though. He just dragged himself everywhere.

I had this dwarf, a woodcutter, who was horrifically mangled in a badger accident.

Oh god the badgers... Once a hunter slipped from an edge while dodging an attack from a badger. He was injured from the impact and fell unconscious. The foul beasts descended the cliff just to proceed mauling and clawing him. They even broke more of his bones and bit off a hand. Another dwarf rushed in order to bring him to a bed, and the badgers scattered. The doctors treated him for a year and a half, I think. He later got infected, but managed to overcome the infection, but was full of scars and utterly traumatized.

And the giant ones are a walking fortress-ending disaster.
