[176.38a] Ghost town and the floating items
« on: February 16, 2008, 08:49:00 pm »

Something that might be a bug:

I'm in adventure mode and there is a human town that appears to be abandoned. I tried taking a few items from a shop to see if angry people would come after me. Nothing. Is this normal? The town does have a large keep, but it's empty.

Something that is probably not a bug:

The second matter is probably just something that isn't addressed yet. However, I couldn't find any reports on this so I thought I'd add it to the post. It was an interesting oddity, anyway:

In Fortress mode, I tried building on a site sharing with three goblin towers that I had attacked in adventure mode. Apparently, I missed one goblin that was still alive. Otherwise, the site was exactly the same as in adventure mode.

However, shortly after starting, the goblin towers disappeared and the areas that would have been solid reverted to solid rock... trapping items and dead bodies in the solid mass. The areas above ground became empty, of course, and Items that were in higher levels remained floating in space. The one, living goblin guard, though listed as hostile, ran straight to my camp and then just hung out as if he were part of the expedition.

It would have been awesome to battle the towers... uh, assuming I hadn't killed everyone in them before. Maybe in future versions, hmm?  :)

I have to say I've had this happen many times, but it is the same at the "cave cave-in" bug.  Adventurer visits the site, ..., dwarves move in later and a few seconds go by when...WHOOSH! The landscape totally changes.  'Cept for me, the towers (now with nothing under them) collapsed on themselves.  And all the goblins are my best friends.

I haven't played since 33f, but I could get this to happen every time if I visited a site first then tried to move in.  Caves and dark towers alike.  Maybe works on human towns too, but I haven't tried.  I had assumed that the problem was fixed when the "cave cave-in" problem was fixed.

On the second part as well, I ran into quite a few abandoned towns, but I couldn't reproduce it regularly.  I would walk into a town, the carp and hippos would start killing people (not everyone), I'd leave town, see a migrant group on the map, then go back in town hoping the hippos had moved on, and VOLIA! No one in town anymore (lots of hungry hippos, only a few corpses).  The migrant group(s) would contain a guard or a pesant, no one else.  Who knows where Bumblyshanks the Swordmaster went?  When one town was evacuated, all of them were and not with an equal amount of migrant groups.  I didn't test dwarven halls, towers, ect.

The best reason I had traced it to was doing a single mod to dwarves (read:my adventurer) speed to 10.  Human cities were the ones with the problem.  It then that I noticed the world map properly updated cities from '#' to '+' when everyone left.  I quit running into this in 33b I think.
